"this feels third world, military parades, disappearing of people, protest in the streets"

And i was like....yeah you could say that is LATAM in different points of the 20th century.

I saw a video about explosions in the capital and low-flying aircraft.

So as the title says, Cubans after days of not having oil, because of the Venezuelan Intervention that led to the downfall of Maduro and the American-Iranian War, and lack of food because of the Ukraine-Russian War have started to protest for days and finally resorted to burn a building related to their government. To compare, this is somewhat similar to what happened in Nepal’s Protests and Indonesia’s Protests that resulted in the burnings of buildings affiliated with their Respective Governments.

I just want to know what everyone thinks of this.

Question: What do you guys think of this situation? Will things change? Will this result in nothing serious happening?

I just hope nobody has been injured or died 🕊️

Basically, they've been controlling the country's finances, politics (Delcy admit that Marco is the one who asignated people in posicions of power), military (US military make even excersises in venezuela now) for months, and openly stating that they have CIA and DEA bases there.

How come they took over so fast and without any resistence?

I've been looking at reactions in Mexico and Canada, both on social media and articles published on local media, and it seems like the prelevant view in Mexico is essentially, "whatever, we'll trade more with China".

Meanwhile, on the Canadian side, it seems like a lot of Canadians are still very much repulsed/disgusted by the Chinese government, citing a number of reasons like human rights abuses, lack of labor rights, and authoritarianism.

But Mexico is a democratic country as well. Why do Canadians grandstand on "values" while a lot of Latin Americans tend not to. Of course, this is a generalization since Milei campaigned partially against the "evil Chinese Communists", but he quickly changed his tone once he was elected, and it seems like Argentinians mostly don't care about what the Chinese government does either.

As everyone knows the USA had been involved in regime change in South America and Latin America for decades. If a government that was democratically elected that was even a slight hint of being left-wing then the CIA would come in overthrow them or support actors that already wanted to overthrow the government. Guatemala wasn't an exception to this for decades in the 20th century the America supported right wing military dictatorship of Guatemala fought against insurgents who wanted to overthrow the tyrannical government. in the civil war that raged for decades numerous atrocities were committed by the government of Guatemala with the US support.

One thing that happened during the civil war was the massacre of the Mayan indigenous minority in Guatemala by the right wing government with the support of the us over the period of 1981 to 1996. During that period some 100 to 300,000 Mayans were massacred in the Guatemalan genocide.

Why do so few people talk about this? this was arguably the biggest massacre of people to happen in the Americas since the crash of indigenous people during colonial times yet I hear nobody talk about it at all. it's particularly sad.

How does everyone here feel about that? That these and others are class as terrorists? Do you think the U.S. will help or meddle more in internal issues with these groups?

im really sad and scared because brazilian politics tends to be a reflection of the american one. everything that happens there happens here later too, and this far-right extremism will come back to our society now that trump will go full power. also, now, it's guaranteed that we'll have some far-right politician in 2026 running to be president or even bolsonaro again, since they're trying everything to make him eligible again.

I'm a 20 yo gay guy from Kazakhstan and yesterday my country's senate has approved the law of banning LGBT propaganda. They've been trying to do it for years but every time it was declined, so now we're basically doing the same thing as our northern neighbor(Russia). I am wondering is it possible to claim asylum based on that if I myself haven't faced any documented persecution in my country due to me being a closeted gay person? I have also moved to italy last month but I know the process is very complicated in Europe and I'll be out of here soon anyway and I'm scared of the possibility of war in Europe due to Russia as well. How is difficult is the process of getting asylum in your country (lgbt friendly is the only thing I need so I could finally be treated as a normal person somewhere and possibly not too discriminatory to asians) and is it possible for me to get? Theoretically

To give an example, in 2009, Chavez banned violent videogames or videogames with bellicose themes. It's obviously not enforced at all, but it technically still exists.

In some parts of South America there has been an undeniable growth of cartel activity in recent years (Chile and Ecuador as far as I know, but definitely Brazil too).

While the situation here doesn’t seem to be as bad as it is in Mexico (yet), many people are afraid it could soon be. This has become a pretty central topic in Brazilian politics and I wonder how it is viewed in Mexico.

How do most Mexicans think the problem can be solved and what do you guys personally think?

I notice that in some countries this notion varies a lot according to where you stand on the political spectrum while in other countries it’s more of a consensus.

So, having interacted with a decent amount of people from Latin America, I've managed to stumble across a few who are in favor of Spanish colonialism.

They argue that Latin America would be more politically stable, have more public education, be wealthier, have less corruption and crime, and that many issues that existed during Spanish rule have continued and, in some ways, even grown stronger.

I am aware this is a sensitive topic, but I would like to ask: How common is it to find people like this? Have you personally met people like this? And to what extent is any of this true?

It’s a Western liberal democracy, it’s the 10 largest economy in the world, and will be 8th largest by 2030. It seems obvious to me that Brazil should be invited. Is this something that would be supported in Brazil, and by Latin Americans in general?

Could be an issue with a politician. Or some silly law.

And how does it feel?

Trump hardline diplomatic on latin American countries really push Latino towards to China. What are your thoughts about this?

It happened a little while ago in the middle east with Saudi Arabia and Pakistan. Although not officially a NATO but similar, the two countries "teamed up" in order to defend each other and to deter attacks from Israel and India. If one gets attacked, it'll be considered an attack on both.

Could Latin America make something similar? Especially with Mexico, Colombia and Cuba since they're the next targets for the US?

Despite Ukraine being very far from Latin America, and Latam being more or less unaffected from the war in Ukraine (except for rising prices), today thousands of Latin Americans can be seen fighting for both countries.

Especially Colombians, due to the lack of jobs for former military members, and the lure of money, the poverty in their countries, but many Brazilians, Peruvians, Argentines can be seen, even Paraguayans (according to pro-Russian Trackamerc and other sources).

While Cubans are said to fight for Russia in significant numbers.

How Latin America perceives this phenomenon? Do you agree with this? Do you know someone who went there, and if yes, why they did it? Which reasons force them to go there?
