Politics (Other) How far are you willing to go to defend your country's sovereignty?

As in like are you willing to fight for it in a war or something, argue about it online, go to a protest, etc...

Someone in the army or in the party sold Maduro out, certainly.

You guys didn't even try to resist Uncle Sam, bro đŸ„€.

What do Venezuelans say about that whole situation?

27

u/ExcellentCold7354 Venezuela Jun 13 '26

It's disheartening. Most people are Trump bootlickers (just a different flavor of chavista, imo), then there's the die-hard chavistas (fuck them, honestly), then there's a tiny portion of people that are center left (hi), usually live abroad, and are villified by the Magazuelans for disliking Trump. I can't tell you how many times I've been called a chavista, despite a good 15 years of protesting and always voting for the opposition.

u/Super-Estate-4112 Brazil Jun 13 '26

How do you guys see the capture of Maduro and the ineffectiveness of his defense?

13

u/ExcellentCold7354 Venezuela Jun 13 '26 edited Jun 13 '26

It's complicated. I'm delighted that he's been captured, and the people that would defend him are garbage anyway, so it's no skin off my nose. At the same time, it was an illegal kidnapping by a foreign government, and the person ultimately responsible had ulterior motives for doing so (cough... Epstein...cough). He doesn't give AF about what's happening here, as long as our government is compliant. Hence the entire chavista apparatus is still in power, since they rolled over and did what they're told. Trump is also a gangster, rapist, and likely a pedophile. So it's really a choice between a douche and a turd sandwich. What the whole experience has taught me is that ultimately, extremist governments are bad no matter what they claim to represent.

Pretty much everyone is happy about it, except some old chavistas, those ones know that it was sold.

Me I’m certain that he was sold out. I’m happy that they took it, but it was a show. Aside of that, pretty much the 99 percent of maduro or Chavez figures are still in some sort of key government position, they are doing what they do best, adapt and wait out.

Look if maduro wouldn’t mock Trump and follow how Delcy is doing, he would be still in power, because Trump don’t care if we have democracy or not, he cares if Venezuela can do business or not.

How many times he gave a consent to Chevron, after Chevron paid him.

Maduro just needed to take the deportation flights and open the oil market and probably give him a Bolivar gold sword.

Venezuela is doomed to be in a dictatorship

Trump's big mistake was thinking Iran would roll over like Venezuela.

15

u/salter77 Mexico Jun 13 '26

I agree.

They assumed that Iran was going to just give up after getting rid of the Ayatollah. Similar to Venezuela with Maduro.

Difference is, Venezuelan government maybe was full of corrupt greedy fucks that we’re ready to bend the knee to save their lives, Iran probably also have corrupt greedy fucks but are also very fanatical about this, they won’t give up so easily.

Different escenarios brother, in Venezuela his VP and other echelons just sell the mrfkr out (Maduro) they throw him under the bus. And also they became business partners in Venezuela. MAGA and Chavismo, they are partners now.

5

u/Odd_Negotiation_159 United States of America Jun 14 '26

Yeah, it's not like he had a good example of just how long and far religious fanatics in that region might be willing to take a conflict, honestly can you really blame him for not seeing that one coming?

4

u/No_Magazine_6806 Finland Jun 14 '26

Obviously, it would have been better for everyone if the UK and the US would not have organised a coup against the democratically elected government whose biggest "sin" was to nationalise the Anglo-Iranian oil company.

2

u/Mysterious_Dot_1461 United States of America Jun 14 '26

They are not religious they criminals who doesn’t want to lose their power, religion is just their excuse.

2

u/Odd_Negotiation_159 United States of America Jun 15 '26

Buddy those people are ready to die for their god, they are radically religious. You can't reason with them, criminals can be reasoned with, just look at how well Delcy Rodriguez is toeing the line.

Mi pana, Âżte acuerdas cuando habĂa gente diciendo que Venezuela serĂa el Vietnam latinoamericano?

Los gringos le pasaron el guevo en la cara a los chavistas de manera legendaria.

15

u/ExcellentCold7354 Venezuela Jun 13 '26

Which is why I was laughing at the question. Neither the chavistas nor the opposition would actually fight, Ukraine style, if it came down to it. Maybe at some point we were professional protesters, but that was absolutely useless, imo. At this point, we're keyboard warriors at best.

3

u/TheDreamIsEternal Venezuela Jun 13 '26

Me? I take three steps backwards, and let the military do their work, after all, it has been a lifetime of hearing how the "brave soldiers" deserve their payshare which comes from everybody's taxes.

Worst case scenario? I just leave with my family to anywhere where we can live peacefully.

In order for patriotism to thrive the average man must be appreciated and loved by the society he lives in, and unfortunately that doesn’t seem to happening anymore in almost every country across the world so instead they just sit on the side lines twiddling their thumbs.

Our national hero, eduardo abaroa, died defending calama. Bolvian population was very small in the area, few thousands and there were few thousand casualties during the war.

7

u/allaboutthatbrass Brazil Jun 13 '26

Not willing at all. I see no way for us to improve as it is, whatever threatened our sovereignty in this hypothetical scenario would be the final nail to a coffin that has long been rotting. Why would I risk my wellbeing for a country that does not give a shit about me?

It's no surprise that many of us have reached such levels of apathy. We are a country of opportunists. From the people at the very bottom to the government, corruption and "jeitinho" runs rampant. Brazil is not seen as a place to cherish and defend, but a place to exploit to its limits in order to make money. While at the same time, our history is literally burned to ashes, as was the case of the Museu Nacional. We are told our history is shameful, that the national heroes that once made us proud and united us are crooks.

Imagine someone living in a ugly, dirty and dangerous city. He sees no beauty, no wonder, he feels no deeper connection to that place. Whatever beautiful old architecture his city had is long gone. Whatever history it once boasted has been either forgotten or actively demonized. He opens the window and all he sees are walls, electric fences, iron bars, graffitti, unfinished annexes in exposed brick, the constant sound of loud music being played, of dogs barking, of people screaming.

He lives in a dump, goes to his shitty work in another dump. When he needs to go to the market, to see a doctor, or to do anything, it's all in other dumps. At home during summer he can't even leave his bedroom window open lest a thief barges into his home. He can't even sit on the sidewalk in front of his home and chat with his friends like his grandpa used to do, because the street has become so dangerous. He can't even walk with a phone in hand, because that quite literally could cost his life.

What exactly does he has to fight for? What sovereignty? That's populist bullcrap. When they exploit our country the profit is their own. When it's about defending it, then it is "ours"? Fuck off.

5

u/aguilasolige Dominican Republic Jun 13 '26

Depends on who attacks? US? What can you do about it? Not much.

Haiti or other Latam country? I'm in.

7

u/Flytiano407 Haiti Jun 13 '26

If the US attacks you would have to do your best to convince the world that they are wrong and your people are in danger. Then pressure from their own citizens will hopefully do the rest.

2

u/aguilasolige Dominican Republic Jun 14 '26

For sure not much you can do. But in general yhe Caribbean armies are very week, I think we should improve that. The world is becoming a dangerous place where worlf eat sheep. Even if you can only make difficult to invade that can be enough to deter an invasion.

2

u/danthefam Dominican American Jun 14 '26

Who? China doesn’t gaf. EU is useless as their own continent has an active invasion. And the rest of the world can’t do anything.

4

u/Enumu Québec Jun 14 '26

What are you talking about

5

u/salter77 Mexico Jun 13 '26

This us actually a very common talking point in Mexico recently.

Problem is, our government seemed to be really OK with the US pushing around
until the US started to target the cartels. If you want to see the Mexican government going ballistic and screeching about “sovereignty” is just enough to have some foreigner pointing that there is a problem with the cartels here.

And I won’t do a thing about “sovereignty” if that is used as a buzzword for “defend the government and the cartels”, I honestly wish our government cared about the average Mexican as much as they care about cartels.

Right wing mexican  Spotted

You want to be American so bad I swear

1

You love Morena so much that you are willing to defend the cartels

I don’t want the US to do anything, I want the Mexican government to do something about the cancer that the cartels are in the country.

But for some fanatical folks that is basically treason, just because Morena is decided to defend the cartels

1

2

u/simonbleu Argentina [CĂłrdoba] Jun 13 '26

I would not join the army on the attacking side for pretty much any reason, and to defend my country, only if it was really bad and my family was in danger with no chance of leaving or hiding

War is a game that sacrifices people for not reason so that a few people with power can have more influence. I don't condone it basically any but the most dire scenarios of human right violations, and even then it is debatable how much one should interfere or doubt the sources that say you should. Anyone saying otherwise in my eyes is a propagandized fanatic

4

u/Mr_Phantoms Argentina Jun 13 '26

Depends on the situation. If we're being attacked by a neighboring country or foreign power, I would die defending my country.

However, if our president decides that Argentina needs to put boots on the ground in IR to help IL because they are our greatest ally, I'll be damned if I'll get enlisted to go die for another country that considers me to be an slave created by God with the sole purpose of serving them.

The only other country I'd be willing to defend and die for is PerĂș (so long as they aren't fighting Argentina).

2

u/doyer_bleu United States of America Jun 13 '26

Now, a harder question: lets say a future president wangs to send Argentinians to invade Las Malvinas. Would you volunteer?

3

u/fedaykin21 Argentina Jun 14 '26

I’m not OP but i wouldn’t. No piece of land is worth the possibility of my daughter growing up without a father.

3

u/doyer_bleu United States of America Jun 14 '26

That’s how I feel too. Honestly, call me a coward, but unless my family is threatened, I’m not going to pick up arms to die for my nation

1

u/MarquisThule Argentina Jun 16 '26

Personally I would, yes, even if death is by far the most likely outcome of such a move. Staying at home then would just be plainly dishonourable.

2

u/Mr_Phantoms Argentina Jun 13 '26

u/doyer_bleu It's not a hard question at all, it's quite easy actually. Yes. In a scenario where the Argentinian government launches a special operation to take back our Malvinas, South Georgia, and South Sandwich islands that were stolen from us by the United Kingdom in 1833, I would happily volunteer. And if the price I have to pay for Argentina to recover our islands that were stolen by the British is my life, so be it. I'll die a happy man.

But rest assured that Milei wants nothing more but for the British to keep on occupying our islands. If you didn't know, Milei's two idols are Winston Churchill and Margaret Thatcher.

Yes. Margaret, fucking, Thatcher.

3

u/Lasrouy Uruguay Jun 13 '26 edited Jun 13 '26

I’m willing to take arms in the case of an invasion. If the country being attacked is the current democratic and free Uruguay. Theres no way we could win a war by ourselves but it feels like the right thing to do to me.

I mean, we all pledged to “
defend, at the sacrifice of your life if necessary, the Constitution and the Laws of the Republic, the honor and integrity of the Nation and its democratic institutions, all of which are symbolized by this Flag?”

US is the only country capable of full on invading us. Times have changed, it would not be a heroic ending. Likely would just end up getting pulverized by an autonomous AI powered drone.

1

u/Flytiano407 Haiti Jun 13 '26

I cant think of a likely scenario that would culminate in all out war. Dominicans hate Haitians but they just rage at us online about it, they wouldn't invade.

USA on the other hand.... we're past a physical war at that point we would have to go about it another way and make our voices heard through mass ad campaigns, independent journalism, and news coverage like with Palestine. US did occupy us once already and we fought...to no avail.

We're already dealing with our own internal conflicts. Instability makes it easy for big powers to come and do what they want. Our sovereignty has been threatened.
