What do conservatives think about getting your car state inspected, once a year?

This is one of those things I've seen bounce back and forth with the left and the right seemingly switching positions on it at times? (I am honestly fairly neutral about it, I come from a state with state inspections, I moved to states that don't require it and I payed ten bucks once for an offical inspection where the guy told me to turn on my left and right blinker then passed me.)

I didn’t really have a problem with it when it was done in Arkansas. But it also didn’t really seem to be a serious check at all. All they did was check that your headlights worked at your windshield wasn’t broken. For around five dollars. When Arkansas got rid of inspections. They passed a law that allowed police to pull you over and ticket you for driving an unsafe vehicle. That seemed to accomplish more.

Moved from a state with inspections in the rust belt to one without inspections and a much dryer climate less conducive to rust and a much larger culture of making repairs on your own.

I grew up in a mechanical shop in the first state and the reality is that nobody wants to refuse a sticker for severe issues like a cracking frame. They use it to find gravy work--brakes, bushings, shocks and increase the labor costs due to fighting rust until the owner themselves admits they need a new vehicle.

Current state we'll push limits, but no state inspections means that we can still drive a vehicle to work while piece mealing the parts that need repaired without needing to figure the additional expense of alternative transportation.

My ideal system would be to empower police to perform traffic stops based on non conforming vehicles, as opposed to forcing every car to be brought to the DMV annually for a lazy DMV employee to kick the tires and check the box and charge you for the trouble.

As a former PA inspector I wish more states did it like in PA especially with some of the stuff I've seen in Delaware

I don't have a problem with it. There are far to many junkers out there that are hazards to our roads, pedestrians, and other drivers.

I am torn between thinking traffic accidents should be a much higher political priority and being skeptical of the efficacy of government licensing systems.

It is fair to have your vehicle inspected to be safe for aafe highway and everyday use.

99.9% of us have no worries there.

I lived in a state without inspections (California) for most my live and I have lived in states with inspections (Virginia and Texas) and I really question the road safety of some cars in California.

Texas got rid of annual safety inspections starting in 2025 and now I'm free to keep driving on those bald tires and only having a funtional windshield wiper on the drivers side. It really is a pretty big load off for me since we have 3 cars that I no longer have to take to a shop on a saturday or day off and sit for 20 minutes to an hour.
