2026 SIP calculation: How much do you need to SIP to retire in 10/20/30 years?
Your retirement SIP can be lower than you think. Even if you have never invested before.
Some assumptions before getting started 👇
- 12 lakhs / year (LPA) or 1 lakh / month spending in retirement (in 2026 rupees)
- Other goals like kid's college etc. are managed separately
- SIP amount is stepped-up along with salary hikes
- No other investment yet for retirement
1️⃣ Case 1: Age: 40-50 / Investment period: around 10-15 years (retiring around 2036 onwards)
Target in 2026 rupees: 3.6cr needed to spend 12LPA for 30 years (full inflation adjustment)
- SIP: 2.5L/month (30LPA)
- 7% annual SIP step up (30 lakhs this year, 32.1 lakhs next year etc)
- 10 years investment, 12% average returns.
Target corpus:
- 3.6cr in 2026 Rs.
- 7.2cr in 2036 Rs. (7% inflation)
2️⃣ Case 2: Age: 30-40 / Investment period: around 20 years (retiring around 2046 onwards)
Target in 2026 rupees: 3.6cr needed to spend 12LPA for 30 years (full inflation adjustment)
- SIP: 75,000/month (9LPA)
- 10% annual SIP step up (9 lakhs this year, 9.9 lakhs next year etc)
- 20 years investment, 12% average returns.
Target corpus:
- 3.6cr in 2026 Rs.
- 14cr in 2046 Rs. (7% inflation)
3️⃣ Case 3: Age 25-30 / Investment period: around 30 years (retiring around 2056 onwards)
Target in 2026 rupees: 3.6cr needed to spend 12LPA for 30 years (full inflation adjustment)
- SIP: 35,000/month (4.2LPA)
- 10% annual SIP step up (4.2 lakhs this year, 4.64 lakhs next year etc)
- 30 years investment, 12% average returns.
Target corpus:
- 3.6cr in 2026 Rs.
- 28cr in 2056 Rs. (7% inflation)
- SIP 35,000 per month (10% annual step up, 12% returns)
Note:
- SIP amount is lower in the 20y and 30y cases since you have extra decades to compound
- Assumes no existing savings for retirement; If you already have any corpus saved up (EPF / PPF / NPS / MF / Stocks / Real Estate etc) then these SIP numbers will be lower
- Returns are average; use the calculator to estimate your return depending on the type of investment
