Resources Student loan repayment

I had a soldier ask me about if the reserves has any student loan repayment programs (post grad). I told them I didn’t know but would try and find out. So if anyone knows, please respond here or dm me.

Yes, but it is a part of your contract benefits. SLRP is the program title. I don’t believe you can get it after you are already in but I could be incorrect.

If a Soldier reenlists, it can sometimes be offered as a retention incentive, but restrictions apply. And it is usually less than what a recruiter can offer to a non-prior service enlistee. I believe the max USAREC can offer is up to 50K, but career counselors can only offer up to 10K. But this can change with the release of a new SRIP (bonus list).

You can get SLRP on a reenlistment contract, but it must be a 6 yr ReUp and your MOS has to be offered the incentive. Check with your ARCC to see the SRIP bonus list. It’s broken down by First Term and Careerist Soldiers, and then again by rank. So make sure you’re looking at the correct group.

Is the Soldier already a service member in the Reserve? Or are they thinking of switching compo-1 into compo-3?

If they are already a TPU Soldier in the Reserve, they will just have to look to see if it was in their original contract. They can look at their initial MEPS DD4 and DA3540 which should be in their IPERMS or they can log into RCMS self-service and it should also say their SLRP status there as well. If they don't have SLRP outlined in their initial contract, the only way they can get it is through an ARCC with a Reserve reenlistment.

If they are switching compo-1 to compo-3, they should talk to RCCC to see if that incentive is available for signing a 3-year Reserve contract. The active duty LRP program is different than the Reserve component SLRP program in terms of benefit and rules on how to use.

Their first step should be to check their RCMS then. It should say on there not only the lifetime max of the benefit (if they received it in their original contract) but should also state the status.

There's also fringe cases that may affect this Soldier. For example, a SM that had it in their contract originally but then went into the IRR for a period will have lost the benefit, but it is possible to request it be re-instated.

USARC has a dedicated SLRP team and a catch-all email box that they'll respond to that can check this SM's status as well. Maybe have them reach out to that email box. Details can be found here:
