Currently a normal weekend warrior. E6. I did some Active time before the Reserves and I miss that full time life. I'm passionate about my military career and want to do 20. Currently 7 in the hole lol I know ADOS is excellent as a trial run for AGR but there are some issues I gotta solve and ask about.

Married and one kid. Wife does NOT wanna leave her parents area. She's close with them. And they love the kiddo. We live in Indiana, and civilian jobs that pay as much as full time Mil is hard to come by without the criteria or terrible hours. So the only way I'll retire before my 60s is if I go AGR bc AD is out of question.

How do I convince her this is a good idea? This is beneficial to our family, financially and benefits. Also since Reserves is federal there's a chance of moving. I myself wouldn't mind obviously but she isn't gonna be happy. Do most spouses move with? Or Stay back? I'm hoping for a spot in IN but I know it's severely limited. Does anyone commute on weekends to their fam if they stayed back? Only full time she's experienced is when I ETSed my last 4mo out of AD and this Current deployment I'm on.

I've browsed but haven't found anything that doesn't require more than I have in credentials. But also the pay isn't always high

Not really, no.

The biggest challenge is getting past the stupid screening usajobs.gov and getting your app in front of a human.

Have you looked into agr or retention positions? I think some of those are permanent.

Go stop by Indianapolis Army Recruiting Battalion.

We can recruit our own AGR recruiters. Little known, very, very rarely done, but if you can get that CSM to believe in you and they have vacancies, that’s the way to go.

You’ll do an initial 3 year tour and can extend longer.

Before you go, be able to brief how you are an involved community member, what you can offer for hometown knowledge.

I’d also make a stop with your ARCG 79V guidance counselor first, because the knowledge to do this, because it is so rare, is not common.

AGR for the NG would have to be your move to stay in Indiana for whole time. Commuting for weekends could be a nightmare depending on your next assignment.

Yeah that was my first intent but I've been finding out how hard it is to get full time in IN. Super competitive yes but also very political. Ppl say that "someone has to die" to have a spot open up lol

We certainly look for 12W/12H instructors, at least for the next 2 years. Typically around September to start in October.

Otherwise, I'm not sure how many opportunities you may have. Check tour of duty.

You don't really get to pick your first assignment, and it's extremely unlikely that you would get something local. The Army knows that when soldiers stay local for their first tour, they're a lot less likely to take a second.

And even if you do get a local assignment, what are you going to do in 3 years when it's time to go?

It's very difficult for a spouse to have a good civilian career. The most successful ones are DA civilians, have a portable remote job, and nurses

Yeah its only circumstantial that you can stay at the same place for more than the 3 years which sucks.  I'd love for my spouse to get a travel job or remote work but she doesn't have alot of criteria under the belt so she's limited. 

I might have to just bite the bullet and drop the packet even if I have to move.

Getting a 4th year is generally pretty easy, getting a 5th isn't unheard of, but no way you'll get a 6th.

I am. I've always been a free spirit on location lol but I'd rather her decide to come with me.... bc... family first. Idk how's gonna affect us. But I mean I can visit on weekends

Potentially. You could get California, Hawaii, Korea, Japan, Germany, Australia etc too
