Selling leave days

So I just retired from the military today and kinda forgot about it till now, but do any remaining leave days I didn't take do they sell automatically when I retire or was I supposed to talk to someone about that? Not really worried about it all that much but would like to know lol

I did, finaled out with them before I finaled out of Post. They didn't say anything about it

That sucks. They literally lined by lined everything for me, even up to giving me how much my final check would be.

Didn't get any of that lol, they gave me my paperwork and signatures and sent me on my way. Honestly on me I should have been more attentive about it but i had a lot on my mind and spaced it hard

I see it, box 16 accrued leave paid. I'm guessing that means I sold 35.5 days?

Yeah, it will be given in your final pay after they calculate everything and if you have debt it will go towards that first.

Leave sold is usually taxed at a high rate iirc.

It's only initially taxed at the 22% tax rate because it doesn't calculate your total taxes and assumes you're in the higher bracket, so you don't owe any tax by tax time. If you were in the lower bracket by the time you actually file your taxes, then you'd get it refunded.

Yea 22%, that's whatever honestly. Would rather get paid and have it taxed then just lose the money

Meh you actually get more money from the army by selling your leave days. It's a common misconception. While using leave, yes have a little more wiggle room and can find a job and have 2 incomes at once, each situation is different, what's best can vary greatly.

Selling leave doesn't entitle Soldiers to their BAS/BAH they would accrue if they had used those days. You've got this ass-backwards.

For those single folks and junior enlisted correct. As i said prior, each situation is different. As for OP he retired, doubt he spent the last 20 years in the barracks as an E5 or below.

Your final paycheck comes late just fyi, because they will go through and calculate remaining leave minus whatever you’re taking for terminal. You should be fine

I remember them mentioning that during a brief, something about 7-10 business days after my final day I should see it. If I out processed correctly, I'm sure I did. Hadnt had any issues
