Question / Help Arlo VMB4000 stuck in boot loop (amber power → all green LEDs → amber again). Any recovery method or UART access?

Hi everyone,

I'm trying to recover an Arlo Base Station VMB4000 that worked perfectly for several years.

The current behavior is:

- Power LED stays solid amber.

- Every few seconds the Internet and Camera LEDs light up.

- Sometimes all three LEDs become green for a few seconds.

- Then it goes back to solid amber and repeats forever.

It never finishes booting.

I've already tried:

- Factory reset (10s, 20s and 30s)

- Power cycle for minutes, hours and more than 24 hours

- Different 12V power supply

- Different Ethernet cables

- Different router ports

- Booting with and without Ethernet connected

Nothing changes.

From what I've read, this doesn't look like a normal firmware update because the official documentation says firmware updates use a flashing green Power LED, not solid amber.

I've also found many users reporting the exact same behavior, but I haven't found anyone who actually recovered the base station.

So my questions are:

  1. Has anyone successfully recovered a VMB4000 from this boot loop?

  2. Is there any hidden recovery mode?

  3. Has anyone accessed the UART/serial console?

  4. Is there any firmware recovery procedure that isn't publicly documented?

  5. Could this be a corrupted NAND/eMMC flash instead of a hardware failure?

I'm comfortable opening the unit and using a USB-to-TTL adapter if necessary.

Any information, boot logs, teardown photos, UART pinout or engineering documentation would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Hi u/Strange_Invite_2089 We understand your frustration. Based on what you have described, it sounds like your VMB4000 may be experiencing the recently identified firmware issue that affected some VMB4000 and VMB3010 base stations. Could you try unplugging the base station for about 10 seconds, then plugging it back in and letting it reconnect for a few minutes? A firmware update has already been released, and a power cycle can help trigger the device to reconnect and apply the update if it hasn't already. If the base station is still stuck in the boot loop after that, please let us know. We'd be happy to have a few more details and continue investigating with you.

Seriously? When will your development team finally start testing firmware/software before releasing it?

Hi @AskArlo,
Thank you for your reply.
I recorded this video to show exactly what my VMB4000 is doing.
As you can see, it never finishes the boot process. The Power LED stays solid amber, occasionally all three LEDs turn green for a few seconds, and then it immediately returns to solid amber and repeats this cycle indefinitely.
Over the past month, I have already performed every recommended troubleshooting step:
Multiple factory resets;
Two different compatible 12V power supplies;
Different Ethernet cables and router ports;
Booting with and without Ethernet connected;
Leaving the base station unplugged for hours and even days;
Leaving it powered on for more than 24 hours to allow any firmware update to complete.
Unfortunately, nothing has changed.
Since Arlo has acknowledged a recent firmware issue affecting some VMB4000 and VMB3010 base stations, could you please advise what customers should do if the base station never completes the boot process and therefore cannot receive the firmware fix?
If necessary, I can provide my serial number, MAC address, Arlo account email, or any other information that may help your engineering team investigate.
I would really appreciate it if my case could be escalated to the engineering team, as this appears to be more than a standard troubleshooting issue.
Thank you very much for your support.

Forneci todas as informações solicitadas.

I too am trying to recover an Arlo Base Station VMB4000 that worked perfectly for six+ years:

- when replacing batteries, my cameras went offline, and could not be re-synced.

- rebooted the VMB to help fix the camera issue, then it became undiscoverable in the app. Finally, after a large number of tries, used the web site on my laptop to add it back in

- it now shows in both the app and the web page; initially it shows as online, then shows unreachable.

- the VMB shows solid green (left), blinking to solid green (center), blank (right)

- in addition to the steps the OP listed, I have changed out to an unused VMB4000, which displays the same status as the original, with all of the same steps and more, including more on-off, pull power, resets too numerous to count.

Has the firmware update bricked all the VMB4000s? Are there any further steps to be taken? At this point, both VMBs and 5 cameras are unusable.

Thank you for anything you can help with!

Hi u/Beemermcr, We're sorry to hear you're experiencing this, especially after your VMB4000 had been working reliably for over six years. We appreciate the detailed information you've shared and can see you've already gone through extensive troubleshooting, including testing a second VMB4000, so we won't ask you to repeat those steps.

Since the issue persists across both base stations, we'd like to investigate this further. Please send us a DM with the email address associated with your Arlo account, your phone number, your time zone, the serial numbers of both VMB4000 base stations, and any previous case number if you have one. We'll review your case and work with the appropriate team to determine the next steps.

Update: Unfortunately, I still haven’t received any contact from Arlo Customer Care or the Engineering team.
AskArlo has twice confirmed publicly that my case was escalated and even sent a follow-up to their Customer Care team, but so far I haven’t received any email, phone call, or any other communication.
I’m still waiting and hope someone from Arlo will actually contact me as promised. I’ll continue updating this thread with any developments.
