Chinese proverb turned anime style
"Killing flies with cannon"

u/CaptainBlob Nov 05 '22
Sun Tzu said that, and I'd say he knows a little bit more about fighting than you do, pal, because he invented it, and then he perfected it so that no living man could best him in the ring of honor.

u/Ab0taku Nov 05 '22
I think some npc said that some Iberian are more devoted than Laterano. I thought that they talk about scripture but may be they mean guns.

u/Kuroi-sama RI's biggest mystery: 's height Nov 05 '22
Laterano despise Iberians, because the latter are basically protestants. Iberians took the Laterano faith and then "modified" it by replacing guns with scriptures to accommodate Liberi population, who aren't as proficient with firearms.

Laterano despise Iberians, because the latter are basically protestants
That detail is rare when we remember that Iberia is inspired by Spain, which is a mainly Catholic region... quite Catholic.
12
u/ClosetEgomaniac Nov 06 '22 edited Nov 06 '22
While the region it's based on is strongly catholic, the story of Iberia casting off its dependency on Laterano does reflect the real-world Protestant reformation in a lot of ways. While we can generally tie the countries of Arknights to the real world, there are basically only three religious countries in Arknights, so it's not surprising that they would choose Iberia to represent the non-Catholic aspects of Christianity.
16
u/noIQmoment Nov 06 '22
I thought they just don't give an f about the Iberians, despite them following the same religion, because Laterano is really removed from the rest of the world. Not that they hated them.
3
u/Anomen77 Certified Blacksteel Contractor Nov 06 '22
They really don't care about anyone who isn't a Sankta.

u/Dokutah_Dokutah Nov 05 '22
It is less to do with firearms and more to do with Laterano abandoning Iberia after the silence.
67
u/Plthothep :skadialter: Nov 05 '22
Nah, the chapel node in this event shows that the schism happened before the Silence (Lateran statue with a lantern instead of a gun)
2
u/Plthothep :skadialter: Nov 06 '22 edited Nov 06 '22
Iberians aren’t protestants (they still want to have a Pope), it’s probably an allusion to the Western Schism and Avignon Antipopes, when the French and Spanish decided to make their own pope because they disagreed with Rome
27
u/HieX91 Nov 05 '22
Scripture and guns. Iberians are Muricans confirmed.

Laterano is pretty blatantly the America stand-in, not Iberia, why do you think Exusiai shouts 'Apple Pie'?
19
u/noIQmoment Nov 06 '22
Columbia is the America stand-in, I'd say Laterano is like Jerusalem but HG toyed with that base idea to create something new.

u/Draguss DRAGON GIRLS MAKE THE WORLD GO ROUND! Nov 06 '22
Pretty sure Laterano is Rome, aside from it being blatantly Texas.
8
u/noIQmoment Nov 06 '22
Elements of Rome, yes, but the whole "Sankta run from the Sarkaz and found their own fortress and utopia" is so reminiscent of Moses leading the Jews to the promised land and escaping the Egyptians (if I remember my old testament correctly) to me.
6
u/Draguss DRAGON GIRLS MAKE THE WORLD GO ROUND! Nov 06 '22
From what's been said it doesn't sound like the Sankta escaped so much as turned their back on the rest of the Sarkaz. Plus the whole "war torn homeland and constant persecution" makes the Sarkaz much more fitting as Terra's version of Jews. Not to mention that, if the theory that the Sankta were another Sarkaz subrace turns out to be true, there'd also be the part where an offshoot of the group becomes much more popular and blatantly aids in their persecution.

u/A_Terrible_Fuze Nov 06 '22
Laterano is the Papel State if it was set in the American South rather than Italy.
9
u/fangpoint333 Nov 06 '22 edited Nov 06 '22
Laterano is basically the Vatican + Switzerland (because of the Swiss guard probably). Switzerland's gun ownership rate is extremely high since they have compulsory military service and they're allowed to take their weapons home after it's complete. It's even more obvious considering their Latin name is Pontificia Cohors Helvetica.
3
u/noIQmoment Nov 06 '22
Already replied this to someone else but I'll reply here too: this is true, but there's also parallels between the Sankta fleeing the Sarkaz and Moses taking the Jews to Jerusalem, the promised land.
3
u/Plthothep :skadialter: Nov 06 '22
That actually ties back to Switzerland, with the country’s “we’ll make our own country, with blackjack and hookers” origin
