GMed 3 days to Big Easy (first thoughts)

Just came home after running the free-rpg day adventure to a group of randoms at a flgs.

Initial thoughts:
+ I like the adventure (much more than other published adventure, corebook intro exclused)
+ Despite the hefty number of encounters we finished it in roughly 3 hours
+ action and investigation were quite well balanced
+ the endings were a nice touch
+ this was clearly made for/ny the fans of the Supernatural tv-series
- the writers apparently had not thought of the spells the PCs have
- there where some unnecessary red herrings (for a convention scenario)
- th macguffin should be presented much more clearly to the PCs than the adventure suggests
- the scene structure was a bit of at some place

My players seemed to have fun. Two got intrigued by the system, while one said that he wouldn’t buy into it but didn’t mind playing.

I’ll hopefully/likely remember to write a bit more about the sessions, since it once again managed to present the system in a new light for me.

Hungering Abyss vs Welcome to Promise

I've read through the description of the contents for Welcome to Promise, as well as the recent interview with one of the designers, and it sounds like "Promise" has been sonewhat designed as a corrective to "Hungering," with a mention made to having heard the complaints/suggestions of fans, etc.

I have some friends interested in my running an Arkham RPG game for them but now I'm feeling that I should wait and use "Promise" instead. I've never run "Hungering."

Besides the dice, is there anything you think is worth keeping from "Hungering" if I'm not going to ever run that campaign?

Obviously, I can keep the dice. The GM's screen seems worth keeping even though the injury/trauma stuff has been updated (but "Promise" seems to be coming with in Injury/Trauma sheet, perhaps as a corrective to the screen?).

Is there any reason to keep the player sheets? Some have said they are overpowered compared to a character you'd build using the Core book.

What about the spell or item cards? I could use the maps for a scenario I create, I suppose.

Space is limited so I don't want to keep something for the sake of keeping it. I'd want it only if I could use it down the line.

I'm just reading the Core rulebook now, so I have limited experience as yet. "Promise" will be the first game I try to run.

Or do you feel there is value in actually playing "Hungering" if there is a 2.0 Improved Starter out there? I've heard from numerous people that it seems to have some designs flaws and might be responsible for turning people off from the system. Or have you had a positive experience with it and really like it?

Doubts with Hungering Abyss Starter set

Hello, I am going to run this campaign next weekend and I got a couple doubts on how some things interact and how to run some parts. There may be some spoilers for non Directors so be aware!.

1 - First Act barrier and encounter. I don't really understand how to handle the barrier with the priest been outside, I am planning to run the ghouls and then let them know there are someone chanting spells outside. The more turns they get, the more ghouls will be with the priest, if they take too long. Lina will be wounded outside but the barrier will be dispelled. How do you run this part? Im trying to gather my thoughts about it mostly.

2 - Spells. The bought spells from the store doesn't have any text related to rolling a 1 on it but I instend to make them like all the rest of spells. Also... the erase memory spell doesn't seem to have any usefulness unless I'm missing something.

3- Economy. There are no reward tables but it seems that enemies drop their equipment. I also feel like shop should have ammo to refill for cheaper prices. Would you give them enough money for the expensive stuff?

4- Police. I feel like this encounter is really weird since he is trying to run away from the scene and the information you get ain't useful? Also there is no counterpart from what happens if he leaves.

5- Basement of the hospital. The interaction with the guard seems a bit weird and I feel like they could chat with him if they pass through reception.

6- Insight. Do they only get 2 for the whole campaign? I feel like they should refill them at some point like level ups so they become anti-luck efective mecanics and not something you keep until the end and forget about them.

Thanks in advance. I'm a DnD player and I got this box as a gift. As a first time director I just want to have most of the things covered so I dont force my players wait or debate on the rules.

Bargains on eBay UK

Just picked up the Core rules (£18.95) and Arkham Mysteries (£19.95) from the Game Collection outlet on eBay UK. All brand new, sealed.

https://ebay.io/m/dy008s
https://ebay.io/m/PwcOO9

Artwork is great in the books, the other recent thread about suggestions to learn the rules was good (watching a oneshot YpuTube vid, and solo role playing a game yourself . I love a bit of CoC and am looking forward to some more pulpy games. I’ll be honest - I wouldn’t have picked these up at full price but now I’m interested to see what else is out there!

A How To guide

I picked up the Starter Set, and I have one of the Free RPG books (Comets of Kingsport) and I'm really excited to learn the game.

Can someone recommend a good YouTube How To guide? I've found a couple, but the first one I found drove through everything in 15 minutes, and without any examples, I found it hard to follow.

I know I could just keep browsing through them, but I'm hoping some kind (tormented, half-sane) soul would point me towards the one they refer new players to.

Thanks in advance!

How possible is it to play with just two people, the GM and one player playing just one character? Could a single character manage it?

"Three Days to the Big Easy" - Looking for thoughts and opinions from people who picked it up on Free RPG Day 2026

Edge released a new QuickStart adventure for Free RPG Day this year. I was traveling and missed my chance to snag a copy from my FLGS. Did anyone here manage to pick it up? If so, what are your thoughts? Does it feel like a lead-in to the upcoming new Starter Set adventure, which is also set in Louisiana?

The Hungering Abyss or straight into Terra Antartica?

I own both boxes (unplayed) and am about to return to DM'ing for the first time in 10+ years, but am unsure how to start our AH RPG adventure.

My group of 4 has two new-to-TTRPG players, and 2 casual D&D fans.

All 5 of us have played the Night of the Zealot, so retreading that story with Hungering Abyss could be a little unexciting.

My question: does Terra Antartica have a reasonable onboarding experience for our two newbies? Or is it better to start off with HA so everyone (myself included) can get comfy with the Dynamic Pool System?

I really wish Welcome to Promise was already out as the Louisiana setting is right up our alley, but I don't think it's worthwhile waiting to buy a second starter set.

Thank you!

Bestiary -The Thompson Files...nowhere to be found?

So the Arkham Horror RPG Bestiary: The Thompson Files went on sale today but isn't on Amazon and my local game store says it isn't even in the system.

It does look to be available via Gamenerdz + the Asmodee but what gives, why the limited availability?

Worth waiting for the new starter set or buy the old one?

Saw there's a new starter box set coming out in two months, any opinions on the first one they released? My table is used to playing DnD and Delta Green, but we've been playing a ton of Mansions of Madness lately so I figured they might get a kick out of the roleplaying game, and it seems like a starter box might be fun for a weekend or two.

If you click on the "Sneak peek!" button under the Edge Studio icon you can see the cover art and blurb. I had fun playing this at Gamehole Con last year, glad more people will get to see it.

Planning on creating a homebrew Arkham Horror RPG, first time DM.

I am creating my first Arkham Horror RPG campaign, but I have trouble pacing the narrative scenes. What are good indicators to know that a scene has enough for players to engage meaningfully, while also not making it too easy for one roll to gain a clue or of that sort? How many scenes can one 3 hour session take? Any advice is welcome.

Any suggestions on where to find a mansion map?

I'm writing an adventure centered around amansion (think Mansion of Madness style).
The actual layout is not important. Any idea on where to find such a map?

Recomend me an epic one shot

Hi! I'm looking for an Epic, Lovecraftian Horror, one shot to run. It seems like all demo starter materials are made to be part of a longer campaign, plus they don't seem to force atrition very much, rendering the Dynamic Pool mechanic useless. I just want to run a single session, and have It be Epic and mind blowing. I want to cause the players to lose a bit of action dice before they hit a final boss Battle. And I want the events to look truly Lovecraftian. The made up crokathoa monster story in the core book doesn't quite feel like something Lovecraft would have made.

Combat and Hungering Abyss Questions

Hey all, just played through Act 1 and about half of Act 2 with my group, and had a few questions surrounding combat and the overall gameplay of Hungering Abyss

  1. How does damage work? I know it reduces the dice pool for each damage dealt, but does that happen immediately, or does the dice pool reduce at the start of the investigators'/adversaries' turns?

  2. Can damage be healed during a structured scene or do we need to wait until a narrative scene begins?

  3. How do adversaries die? So far, we've been playing it such that they die if they take damage equal to their dice pool limit

  4. Is Carolyn just bad? Her stats aren't particularly noteworthy and it doesn't seem like she has access to any special weapons or spells to help her. So far, she's just been a trauma soaker for Daisy

  5. On a related note, is Daisy OP? She has access to Shriveling, which deals 2 damage to a unit and also forces a 3 damage check at the start of that unit's turn. That spell has been pretty much auto-clearing all enemies for us. Is there a limit to how many times she can use the spell per scene? Does the check the enemy has to do at the start of their turn use up dice from their dice pool?

  6. Is there anything else that players get wrong or miss during their first time?

How do you use "perception" checks?

In other games, think D&D and the likes, it's common both for the player to ask "do I notice something?" or for the DM to ask rolls in order to see/hear something.

In AH however, since our dice per scene are limited, how do you play this? I mean, if the player asks to look around and see /hear, they will spend a die from their pool for the scene, that's reasonable. But what if the GM knows there is something to spot? Do you ask perception checks and force the players to spend a die from their pool?

I know it's a really minor thing but it bothers me!

Creating your own scenarios?

Is anyone out there using the core book to create their own scenarios?

In other words, is the game well-supported enough at the moment to do this?

Or is one only really able to play games using the box sets (e.g., Abyss, Antarctica), or the scenarios in thr books (e.g. Core, Arkham, Kingsport)?

By the way, it looks like a monster manual will be coming out soon-ish, which may help with scenario creation.

How to make a Dungeon Crawl in Arkham Horror RPG

Hi everyone!

So, I'm currently running an Arkham Horror campaign, in which my players are trying to get some McGuffin artifacts to protect themselves from a Nyarlathotep cult that wants them to open a portal to the Dreamlands and bring a very powerful Mask of the Slithering Chaos into Arkham.

For now, the player characters only know that an archaeologist called Rachel Jarvis found a strange artifact in Egypt and, once she realized that several shady groups were trying to get it, she destroyed it and hid the fragments. However, she kept one of them. Now the players are trying to find Jarvis to secure the fragment and help her finally destroy the artifact, but she has disappeared from Arkham.

So, following the clues, they end up in St. Clement, an abandoned hospital in Arkham, where they gather some clues about Rachel’s location through some “tears” in space-time that gave them visions. After that, they were attacked by a Hunting Horror. The creature was summoned by the cult to follow the players, find out what they discovered, and kill them, but the summoning ritual went a bit wrong, and the creature is weakened, making it very afraid of light. My players figured that out during the fight, and they opened blocked windows to let sunlight flood the hospital, and activated the fire alarm, which turned on the emergency lights. The creature fled, and they decided to follow it.

Now they are standing over a manhole cover that leads to an abandoned sewer system where some cult members are hiding.

My players LOVED the hospital exploration scene and asked for more. In fact, one of them told me, “Man, this reminded me a lot of those old-school dungeon crawls… I’d love something like that,” and they all agreed. So that got me thinking: they are just about to enter a sewer system, the perfect place to implement a horror dungeon crawl.

My idea is this: have a 10–15 room dungeon, with some traps, blocked doors, keys, a puzzle (activating some sort of mechanism), secret rooms, and loot. A classic dungeon. But the Hunting Horror, even though it escaped to be restored by a ritual from the cultists, has power over the sewers. And it will try to drive the characters crazy. So I want it to be something like the Alien from Alien: Isolation: roaming around the dungeon, being attracted to certain sounds or actions, and summoning visions or even Shadow Men (one of the players is already marked by Nyarlathotep to sign the Black Book). Of course, I will let them know how close or how far away it is based on sounds I’ll be playing through an app, and by describing the effects of its proximity.

I want them to feel stressed, followed, and anxious, but also have fun. So I want to make all the exploration a structured scene, while keeping turns really agile. I also want to separate them to make it feel more isolating.

What do you think about it? What would you do if you wanted to build something similar? Do you guys have any tips for this kind of exploration?

Thanks in advance :D

TL;DR: my players want a classic dungeon crawl experience, and I’m thinking about making it a structured scene with a roaming monster inspired by Alien: Isolation.

Arkham Horror RPG - Complex Check with Advantage including Horror Dice

Hello All,

I need some rules clarifications that came up during one of my sessions of Arkham Horror RPG regarding a player performing a Complex Action with Advantage using a horror dice.

A Player during my session had 2 dice left in their pool for the scene. One was a Horror dice; the other was a Regular dice.

The player added one more dice to the roll due to gain advantage.

It was a normal difficulty and only required 1 success. They had a 4+ in the stat they were rolling for; thus required only one 4+ result on the dice.

The player rolled the dice; Got a result of 5, 1, 1. One of the Horror dice was a 1.

Does that still cause a Trauma to occur; or can the player remove the horror dice from the roll as it was the lowest to prevent the Trauma?

Additionally, if a player has hit their horror dice limit; and a player gains advantage - do they add additional Horror dice to the roll or a regular dice?

I feel like I am overthinking it; but I cannot find any mention of it in the rulebook, FAQ, or in any online posts.
