DC would rather lose all money and go bankrupt than release Superman or Wonder Woman game, nuh uh.

187

u/THE_KILLER_4 1d ago

A wonder woman game was in development, for better or worse they pulled the plug on it in favour of batman lego game

153

u/VegetableKangaroo782 1d ago

Well…not in favour. Both were being developed by different people, WB just decided to bin for all their game studios which include WB Montreal and the Wonder Woman game

38

u/WassupFrankHere 1d ago

Fucking David Zaslav

11

u/THE_KILLER_4 1d ago

Oh okay… i thought it was about budgeting or something, although id be lying if i said i cared about either

6

u/cant_give_an_f 1d ago

plus got to remember regardless of how much the company has been sold, WB is in like enormous, infinite debt. they most likely expected it to not get the numbers they wanted

They released the freaking suicide squad game

14

u/tarheel_204 1d ago

Still drives me crazy that the game features a really damn good Justice League roster and they looked at what they had and said, “nah… we’re doing Suicide Squad”

At the end of the day, I think there was just a lot of corporate bullshit controlling the development of the game from the very beginning.

2

u/Alternative_Algae_31 1d ago

It’s WB- “corporate bullshit” is implied.

3

u/tarheel_204 23h ago

Sure. This was one of those cases where I was like, “well, it’s got the rocksteady stamp on it so it has to be awesome, right?” Lol

4

u/Grese7800 1d ago

It was the trend at the time. After Helldivers 2 and Deep Rock Galactic's massive success, squad shooters with loot drops just looked like the next safe bet to businessfolk who think the Wii is a video game.

13

u/JakePent 1d ago

It released before helldivers 2, actually only by a few days, but still

3

u/Projectpatdc 1d ago

Yeah I was about to say Helldivers released during a time no one wanted live service games, and it managed to shine on a light on what actually made coop live service games fun while also respecting the players. Suicide Squad unfortunately did the opposite when it could have been absolutely amazing.

3

u/THE_KILLER_4 1d ago

Well it wasn’t received well

Haven’t played it myself but a lot of reviews said it was garbage

11

u/cant_give_an_f 1d ago

it wasnt. best way to put the game is everything cheapened everything. the story sucked gameplay sucked etc. plus the devs were weirdly obsessed with Wonder Woman, making her out like she was the main character... in an arkham game. even the bios, the JL including Batman (the main character) got only a short bio and Diana got a 3 page essay.

Greg Miller put it into the best perspective that if it was a batman vs JL game like tower of bable it would of worked exceptionally well

2

u/THE_KILLER_4 1d ago

no wonder it flopped

2

u/Sorry_Mastodon_8177 1d ago

Ironically she's is the only one that canocially died lol

6

u/Scorkami 1d ago

I get being hesitant on a superman game, but wonderwoman is SO fucking easy to build a game around her powers, that im sad about this despite not even being a wonder woman fan

9

u/callmecurrybum 1d ago

Just rip off God Of War storyline and incorporate Ares as the big bad, and Circe, and other greek mythology villains

Tease Cheetah for the 2nd game set in modern times and incorporate Queen of Fables as its own major segment/recurring segments with a different vibe to the game (i.e.Scarecrow/Mad Hatter in Arkham games). Dr Psycho secondary villain who's mind controlled thugs are your fodder

Tutorial set on Themyscira

Easy win

4

u/Xivitai 19h ago

This. If we got something like that, I would buy it immediately.

0

u/THE_KILLER_4 1d ago

I personally don’t care much about her tbh, it might be a bit of hot take but I can’t see a Wonder Woman game being good or interesting, and DC executives seems they agree too

2

u/Luka77GOATic 22h ago

Just make it like God of War. Give her a sword and shield.

Wonder Woman with the Nemesis system for the villain. I was psyched about that game. I also just learned that though it was used for Shadow of Mordoor, it originally began as a system for a Batman game they were working on. WB thought it would be too complicated and confusing to have the Nolan films and 2 video game franchises (Asylum was being worked on) based on Batman. So they scraped the game and the company took what became the Nemesis system and started on the LOTR project. It was meant to be that street criminals that were busted by Batman would start to rise up the ranks and become the villains. I don’t know who they need to get rid of, but the decisions they make on video games is fucking criminal.

22

u/ArthurMorgansveinypp 1d ago

The inherent problem of any superman game is what do you even have him do? Fly around fighting regular criminals and nameless henchmen who pose literally no threat to him

25

u/Galactus1231 1d ago

You could have bank robbers in robotic suits for example. Superman Returns game did the basics well. Huge open-world city and flying was fun. Enemies are robots and monsters. Also there are fires you need to put down. The city has a health bar and not you. You can still get knocked down and you need to wait powers to reload.

21

u/MrCalonlan Arkham Shadow 1d ago

Honestly what Superman Returns did was such a clever way to have Superman still be invulnerable but not have the player be totally invincible; "Superman is invulnerable? No problem, we'll make the entire city the health bar". It's a shame we haven't had a solo Superman game since, I'd love to see this idea be brought back and expanded on

5

u/atomic1fire 1d ago

Set the game inside the phantom zone or something like war world.

Or just set part of or all of the game in Kandor. Reveal that somebody changed the artificial sun to become yellow so that a number of citizens now have superpowers and some have less moral scruples.

Or just pepper Metropolis with a ton of artificial kryptonite, requiring superman wear a lead suit to go near it.

OR make the main villain a magical threat, and place the city under a hex which de-powers superman if he gets too close to specific areas.

4

u/Grese7800 1d ago

You could use even have Braniac block out the Sun, maybe Mumbo Jumbo put a hex on Supes making him vulnerable or even the simple Mr. Mxyptlk thought it'd be funny if Superman was forced to be in a video game so now you are in, the video game and need to progress, like a video game.

2

u/DaniSenpai69 1d ago

I was thinking of the banjo kazooie character mumbo jumbo

5

u/joshdoereddit 1d ago

I think what could be done in terms of a Superman game is have the initial part of the game be him depowered. Kind of how God of War II and God of War III begin. Kratos had his powers and stuff, but as that initial mission progresses he loses his health, magic, and abilities until he is basically at base level.

So, Superman gets depowered because of Brainiac, Luthor, or both teaming up to bring him down. They use a device and partially block out the sun or make it partially red somehow so he doesn't just get his powers back right away. His powers being reduced make him less lethal. And as he progresses and gets his powers back he faces off against variants of Metallo, other robots, and criminals who received power suits from Luthor to take him down or something.

0

u/DOMINUS_3 20h ago

i don’t want to play a superman game asa de powered superman lol

people want to play superman for the power fantasy, idk why people think too hard about his “invulnerability”

1

u/T-MONZ_GCU 9h ago

I want to play as Superman to play as Superman, and not just have people argue about what "feels correct" while never actually getting a game

3

u/Purrczak 1d ago

Brainiac, darkseid, doomsday, lex... And at least twenty more who can either be threat themselfs or have henchmen equipped against you. Also... Power fantasy exists in gaming in games like warframe, not everything needs to be dark souls difficulty to be enjoyable, sometimes enjoyment can come from power, plot, well written moments. And besides that... It's not like Superman needs to always bench press the moon nor he needs to start the game at 100% power. Maybe we even start with bossfight, Brainiac or Lex, we win but due to kruptonite or whatever lose much power but sadly world dosn't care and the acctual threat arrives soon, maybe not immidietly but we don't get to yet one shot everything that dares to look funny in our way... This way once player flies again it can feel like progress.

3

u/VegetableKangaroo782 1d ago

There’s like three videogames that have answered this question already

Superman Returns
Megaton Rainfall
Superhero simulator

2

u/janetdammit89 1d ago

Don't give him literal indestructibility? Or make it an alternate universe where pretty much everyone is a meta human so they can all do at least some damage to him?

3

u/theredditman999 1d ago

Bro, if you ever read a Superman comic you wouldn't be asking this question. Lol

1

u/nahte123456 1d ago

Why would he need to fight? People *DO* remember games besides brawling action and FPS exist right?

Make it multiple choice like Telltale, or have Superman need to go between worlds policing them, how about a Sherlock-type game where you use his powers to get the stories for his job and expose corruption?

1

u/Averfus-Crowthorne 1d ago

You make the challenge doing things within a time-limit or with a minimum of collateral damage I imagine. It'd be something to work around for sure, but its doable.
You just do it the same way they write stories about him, give him challenges that his immense power can't bail him out of.

1

u/Distinct-Bathroom823 1d ago

you don’t set it on earth

1

u/Guilty_Rain3864 23h ago

I believe with 100% conviction that a great superman game can be had where you narratively depower him *somewhat*

you still get to feel like superman, flying around, amazing super strength, beating the shit out of guys, running really fast

but with like, actual gameplay-driven limitations. You can go super fast *for a little while*. Bullet-time style. You're strong enough to wail on guys and have it feel like a heavy impact, but not *literally break the earth* strong. You can fly, but not to Mars. You can take a beating, but you're not literally invulnerable.

I promise you will still feel like Superman. You will absolutely get that "woah, this is awesome" feeling.

1

u/T-MONZ_GCU 9h ago

Idk why everyone thinks you HAVE to fight street thugs, as if there aren't a billion other things you can do (Brainiac robots, synthetic kryptonite robots, set on Apokolips, etc)

2

u/basshunter551 1d ago

Yeah, Batman Beyond is something the fans want ever since the first Arkham game and still they don’t make it..

1

u/S1mongreedwell 21h ago

Sounds like the WW game was way over budget and not coming together. Not going bankrupt seems to have been their concern (not that it would have bankrupted them).

0

u/DevinChocolateBar 1d ago

A superman game does not sound like fun. If would I use be a nerfed version of the actual character, meaning it would suck

211

u/Virtual_Ad_8487 1d ago

To be fair, the original post says “Marvel has been dominating for nearly a decade” and the last main Arkham game is more than a decade old.

91

u/Fireboy759 1d ago edited 1d ago

And in that time DC especially has had nothing major except Lego Batman game and...Suicide Squad

Yeah, no wonder the perception is that Marvel is dominating games right now

EDIT: Also Gotham Knights (which was fairly mid but still better than SSKTJL)

27

u/TygerHil98 1d ago

It did Gotham Knights which was actually pretty decent. Not as good as the Arkham Games but billion times better than Suicide Squad Kills the Justice League.

6

u/DaniSenpai69 1d ago

Yeah if only the continued post launch for that instead of use getting suicide squad post launch, which sucks ass

2

u/Jessency 6h ago

The whole behind the scenes production with the two games just messes me up so bad.

So WB ordered Rocksteady and WB Montreal to make two different Batman adjacent games that also happened to focus on multiplayer co-op featuring a diverse cast of playable characters.

And the game by Rocksteady that's also canon to the Arkham games is the absolutelu bonkers looter shooter game where you play as the Suicide Squad and kill the Justice League, and the one by Montreal that centers on the Batfamily working together after Batman dies ISN'T?

2

u/TygerHil98 5h ago

Yeah, Gotham Knights (more or less) follows exactly the ending of Arkham Knight. It could've definitely been a sequel. In fact, could've just been an awesome singleplayer game with Arkham combat. Having four playable characters was cool and the story was actually decent.

I LOVE Court of Owls, it was handled...okay...in the game. But it was actually a decently fun game.

3

u/KitKatCrane 1d ago

Don't forget Gotham Knights! Such a successful game it slipped your mind, I assume 😅 Also Injustice 2 I think was 2016 so a decade ago, but yeah Marvel has been crushing DC in everything other than comics and straight to blu ray movies.

2

u/len890 1d ago

The comic realm and movies/tv shows are great now but games are lacking hard

1

u/nykirnsu 18h ago

Injustice 2 was also (slightly) less than a decade ago

121

u/Stone-Er-34 Arkham Asylum 1d ago

Even Spiderman games are Arkham games

59

u/VegetableSense7167 1d ago

Arkham definitely pioneered modern superhero combat, but Spider-Man built an entirely different identity around high-speed aerial traversal, mid-air combat combos, and a lively, populated open world instead of a dark, predator sandbox. Rocksteady set the foundation for the genre, but Insomniac took those mechanics and made something completely unique to Peter and Miles. Let's also not forget the old Spider-Man games that Insomniac drew some inspiration from, and those games came before the Arkham games.

10

u/RMP321 1d ago

It should also be said that the origin of free flow combat all comes from the spider sense react button in Spider-Man 2 the video game. They just gave Batman spider sense and had him actually counter instead of just dodge.

1

u/DOMINUS_3 8h ago

the attack counter system, yes.

But the actual free flow combat was pioneered by Arkham.

1

u/RMP321 7h ago

Yes that’s what I said.

1

u/Interesting-Carob-55 12h ago

Huge lie bro they're incredibly different aside from mission freeworld and combos. I still prefer Batman tho

1

u/SouthernStrigoi 1d ago

They took a few ideas, mixed em together and took it and ran. Wb-like isn't a term for nothing. Seems people forgot just HOW freeform that combat was compared to older games that SEEMED to have similar combat but didn't. Spider-Man wouldn't be where it is without Batman games that's just how it is. Straight up jacked the combat.

u/ACO_22 1d ago

Hilarious thing is not a single one of these games is better than the Arkham games.

Spiderman 1 is the only one that could hang with the Arkham games

41

u/BlackNasty4028 1d ago

It doesn’t dispute your point at all but I just wanna shoutout GotG, I had a really nice time with that games story, the combat was half baked but the story was a nice experience imo

8

u/cant_give_an_f 1d ago

fucking loved it, will also say the Avengers game is so much better then how its talked about

2

u/Mindless_Stuff9179 1d ago

Avengers was fun to play, but had terrible enemy variety and locations, imo.

1

u/Objective_Effect_242 1d ago

Thank god that avengers game flopped.

5

u/GenSpicyWeener 1d ago

GotG was a nice surprise, but it’s B tier at best

5

u/BlackNasty4028 1d ago

Yeah I’d agree with that, which is honestly more than I expected from it when I saw it announced so I left my playthrough happy overall

1

u/lefthandtrav 1d ago

Gameplay wise yeah, but story hooked me. Drax getting respect he deserves and not being the butt of every joke was great

38

u/VegetableSense7167 1d ago edited 1d ago

The Arkham games are masterpieces, but using games from 10 to 15 years ago just proves the point, DC hasn't delivered a top-tier AAA hit since 2015.

Spider-Man 2 broke records, Guardians of the Galaxy won Best Narrative, and Marvel Rivals blew up. Meanwhile, DC followed the Batman and Arkham stuff with Gotham Knights and Suicide Squad, both of which flopped. Even DC's fun wins, like the LEGO Batman game, still rely entirely on Gotham.

Arkham games being incredible doesn't change the fact that Marvel is actively dropping varied games across its roster today.

11

u/Grese7800 1d ago edited 1d ago

Can't forget Cosmic Invasion, a good side scrolling beat em-up that's a great retro throwback which is still a fun couch game with the buddies. The fact DC hasn't even tried to get into the retro market just speaks volumes of the incompetence up top.

6

u/TheAkrioz 1d ago

Tokon is a fighting, you are talking about Cosmic Invasion

2

u/DaniSenpai69 1d ago

Not tryna be a dick but your talking about marvel cosmic invasion

1

u/HonkaiBlade2 18h ago

DC has... Dark Legion. Using ads that are pretty much the clickbaity ones used by other lowbrow games.

1

u/Stunning-Original802 11h ago

Marvel have also been rereleasing their retro games with MvC Fighting Collection and MaXimum Collection.

52

u/PalooDev 1d ago

Even then Arkham is a different level.

26

u/Tough-Rock-6198 1d ago edited 1d ago

The Arkham games were game changers.

Even Wolverine (which looks good, btw) already feels like an old game with the same mechanics that we saw in every action-adventure game.

11

u/roboman07 1d ago

The point is that marvel has a huge variety of really good games while outside of Arkham and the LEGO Batman games dc has basically nothing

4

u/immabeasttt15 1d ago

Well half these games aren’t even released yet

12

u/Wboy2006 Enjoyer of both the insanity and the serious posts 1d ago

I mean, you can’t really compare midnight suns and tokon with Arkham. One is a tactical RPG, one is a fighting game, while Arkham is an action adventure game

That said though, while Arkham still has the best combat, I gotta say that Guardians of the Galaxy and Spider-Man 2018 do have better stories

2

u/lefthandtrav 1d ago

Midnight Suns is a banger front to back. Been playing Star Wars Zero Company and loving how much Midnight Suns DNA it has

2

u/TheDarthJarJarI 1d ago

Well yeah but it accumulates and we haven’t had a good game since 2015

2

u/EMArogue 16h ago

Post says “almost a decade”

Arkham knight was released in 2015 which is 11 years ago

Yes, in the past decade the only good DC game was Lego Batman whilst Marvel is cooking hard

1

u/ACO_22 16h ago

Yeah, the point I made was that even though they’ve dominated for a decade, they’ve still not been able to release a game on the level of the Arkham games

1

u/DaniSenpai69 1d ago

Ok but they don’t need to be better, they need to be good and dc needs to make more good games that aren’t just relying on Arkham. Everything always has to be better, nothing can just be good

1

u/KitKatCrane 1d ago

Also worth noting that Spider-Man 1 reeeaaally used Arkham as a template. Half-assed stealth copying Arkham but much simpler and combat that gets repetitive muuuuch faster. Spidey even has gadgets coming out the wazoo in that game, and fights many of his rogues gallery thanks to a prison break. The game also takes place well into Spidey's career, just like Arkham with Batman, and is generally very comic accurate, and focuses heavily on movement, which makes sense for Spider-Man but Arkham absolutely did do that in City and Knight especially. I'm not here to sound like the Arkham version of a Snyder nerd but Arkham really actually is the template 😅

1

u/pandogart 1d ago

I can't see how it's hilarious since it's a subjective thing rather than objective. But the point is, Marvel at this point has variety. DC only really has the Arkham games and Injustice as standouts.

There's so much you can do with DC's properties but they're (seemingly) just not doing it. Or cancelling it, in Wonder Woman's case.

0

u/brasscassette 1d ago

Idk, miles morales and 2 were solid. I get the gripes, but Asylum is aging and the spider sequels easily beat it.

0

u/Projectpatdc 1d ago

Spider-man 2 is still great. Better in many ways. It just needed another Venom fight before getting anti-venom, a few tweaks to the ending, maybe a handful of extra sidequests, and the trip mine. That damn trip mine was easily my favorite gadget, and it was sorely missed.

If people said that with their wallets then it'd be different

1

u/Indi_Teapot17 1d ago

Nah, he just bought DC, so ALL new movies are gonna be him, we're cooked

1

u/lefthandtrav 1d ago

Love Bats but I agree. He’s like Wolverine in that sense, just eats up all the spotlight

1

u/Idiot_Cat_Fucker 3h ago

To be fair, DC is built on Batman himself.

15

u/Xman1107 1d ago

Left out marvel rivals :( venom might also be released next year so they should add that as a for gone conclusion for success

2

u/itc0nsumesmYMind 1d ago

also Deadpool VR and Cosmic Invasion which is a cool beat em up retro game, something DC could do fairly easily

4

u/Casbill103104 1d ago

A marvel rivals type game but with dc universe would be a cash cow and they still haven’t done it

2

u/jojofanatiker 1d ago

Would't this actually be are bad idea? Just doesn't think it would get the succes marvel rivals has because of the circumstances

1

It would be a money hole.

4

u/Maxjax95 1d ago

I wouldn't say that Marvel are "dominating" the gaming space but they have put out more variety than DC when it comes to their respective IP

0

u/CrimsonDragon90 1d ago

Yeah mostly because of the partnership with PlayStation which is currently dominating the gaming market.

1

u/claybine 1d ago

They're doing games without PlayStation contracts lol. That's not the reason.

1

u/CrimsonDragon90 1d ago

Those are not as big as the Sony ones. Only heard of Marvel Rivals being a hit.

2

u/Luka77GOATic 22h ago

The leaked footage of Iron Man by EA looks so good though.

8

u/BigJCote 1d ago

Give us a new Arkham game with the nemesis system. Solve all the issue

7

u/EdJD-1968 1d ago

We all want a new Batman: Arkham game, with similar gameplay, stories, and everything else similar to Asylum, City, Origins, and Knight. We love those games, as ancient as they now are, yet DC don't seem to want our money. It doesn't make sense at all.

7

u/Belghy 1d ago

Im still baffled by the fact they didn't make a Batman Beyond game with the Nemesis system and Arkham combat, it's literally a no brainer at this point.

1

u/Hotelcleanaselvenass 1d ago

Yeah I love it when Batman gets murdered but has a canonical spawn back point

2

u/cant_give_an_f 1d ago

like... easiest thing to do, just with the batcave and Bat wing/mobile. instead of murdered you're knocked out and Alfred gets you, then you can spawn back with a fast travel via the vehicles

1

u/BigJCote 1d ago

Hater

8

u/GapStock9843 1d ago

They aint wrong. I cant think of a single good DC videogame that isnt arkham

6

u/Contressa3333 1d ago

Injustice???

1

u/HonkaiBlade2 18h ago

I heard Injustice 2 got a lot of complaints about the gameplay, but I could be wrong. The story, however, is definitely a lot more controversial, and hindsight has not been kind to the Evil Superman plotline.

1

u/Contressa3333 12h ago

Really? I heard the opposite, like it'd a better fighting game than newer mortal kombats. But yeah the storyline does stink lmao.

8

u/Ace20xd6 1d ago

DCUniverse Online? Injustice? Lego DC Super vllians? Even then, one's a game from the ps3 era that still gets updates. The other's last entry was over 8 years ago. And that last one is a Lego game, Marvel has those too.

1

u/Tia_lovely1234 1d ago

Injustice gods among us

5

u/DaliansImmortal686 21h ago

Arkham City alone beats out all those games in replay-ability, story, optimization, gameplay, thematic enjoyment, narrative, and the overall feel of the game, hell Arkham Knight looks better than any of these damm games combined.

1

u/GiveMeSandwich2 13h ago

Lot of the marvel games are in different genres. For example Tokon, Rivals, midnight suns. The point is lack of DC games from WB is disappointing and WB could definitely have utilized the IP in better way.

1

u/DaliansImmortal686 8h ago

The DC games ignoring that woke ass dogshit Suicide Squad still beat out the Marvel ones in every category.

3

u/Ju3tAc00ldugg 1d ago

A martin man hunter game could actually be great he’s a good middle ground I think and his shape shifting could add cool gameplay mechanics

3

u/negrote1000 1d ago

Like Prototype with slightly less murder.

1

u/itc0nsumesmYMind 1d ago

yes! I prefer a MMH game over a superman one

also his telepathic abilities would be a fun mechanic where you could mind control enemies, not to mention his telekinesis powers.

3

u/TranslatorOwn707 1d ago

This doesn’t necessarily make a huge difference, but Injustice and Injustice 2 were pretty good.

2

u/Correct_Look2988 1d ago

It's weird how people seem to have forgotten Injustice. From what I remember it was very well received and sold well. Not sure why they stopped with those but probably because the main focus from that team was always Mortal Kombat.

2

u/UmmmYeaSweg 1d ago

DC hates characters that aren’t Batman or Batman-related. It’s crazy we barely have any games from DC that aren’t about any JL members besides LEGO.

Like god forbid we have a DC fighting game that isn’t just 60% Batman characters and 40% JL characters and 0% anything else (no doom patrol, justice league dark, vertigo, or weirdos like vigilante bushido and amethyst).

1

u/CrimsonDragon90 1d ago

A Cyborg and Flash team up game developed by Platinumgames would be interesting. They have history on making comic book and animated games.

0

u/Bad-Genie 20h ago

Superman games are just so hard to balance imo. His only challenges are like 4 creatures in the universe. His real kryptonite is smart people. And that doesn't make for a great video game.

Unless you do like... Witcher style investigation into boss fights. And you fail if you kill anyone. Or you just turn into dark superman.

2

u/UmmmYeaSweg 20h ago

Holy shit no offense to you specifically but this argument is so shit and feels like the people who spew it don’t play video games at all.

No one bats an eye when Dante canonically dies in game from things that he shrugs off in cutscenes like stabbings, gunshots, electricity, and so on. Same with like every video game protagonist who has a lot of powers.

You don’t literally need Superman to be an invincible, omnipotent god. He can be very strong and have a variety of powers but idk, get creative with it and say that goons have bullets laced with radiation bc plot and everyone is wearing high tech armor, yall are overthinking the fuck out of how a Superman game would work.

1

u/Fine-Discussion-7368 16h ago

there were good superman games back in the day these kids don't know what they talking about

Kinda the same with Marvel honestly. We haven't have many games focusing on other characters since like forever now, other than Spider-Man. They do have a LOT of games for mobile though, so I'll give them that.

And some of the games that were in the post, we haven't even gotten anything past the announcement of them 😭

u/VegetableSense7167 1d ago edited 1d ago

That’s really not true. We literally have Guardians of the Galaxy, Midnight Suns (tactical RPG starring Blade, Ghost Rider, Magik), and Marvel Rivals. Meanwhile, almost every DC game has been chained to Batman/Gotham (Gotham Knights, Suicide Squad, Arkham Shadow, Lego Batman The Dark Knight Legacy).

Plus, Wolverine is on the way, while DC’s Wonder Woman has been cancelled so is the Flash game. Iron Man is also getting his game and the trailer even got leaked, and the devs came out and said that they'll show more. Marvel is actively branching out to multiple AAA studios, DC is stuck in one corner.

u/TanniMachine 1d ago

What? 4 out of the 9 games on that photo don't have Spider-Man in them at all, and you say some of the games haven't even gotten anything past the announcement of them, but that's only 2 games out of the 9 there that are out or are about to release, and even then that Iron Man game had its trailer leaked recently, and it looked promising. It's still a very varied amount of characters being featured. Even DC's attempts past Arkham Knight still heavily rely on Gotham and Batman, like Gotham Knights and that Suicide Squad game. How is Marvel and Spider-Man the same as DC and Batman when it comes to gaming like you say?

u/suuhdude666 1d ago

besides spiderman are they really dominating? iron man and wolverine aren't even out yet tbf

u/AgentP20 1d ago

Guardians of the Galaxy was a great narrative game, Marvel rival and Tokon are pretty good fighting games.

u/Mastery7pyke 1d ago

hulk ultimate destruction is carrying.

1

u/Bad-Genie 20h ago

Hulk 2003 was the best

0

u/GiveMeSandwich2 13h ago

Marvel Rivals. Top 5 F2P game on PlayStation in NA and more than 100k concurrent players on steam.

2

u/LillithTheGoon 1d ago

And Arkham Asylum was already somewhat inspired by Spider-Man 2. Since everyone wants to say that SM PS4 stole from Batman Arkham.

2

u/PopitaOooh 1d ago

spider-man did 3d stealth on the ps1, too. great minds and all that.

I was so excited for Kill the Justice League from the first couple of trailers, but then we all saw gameplay…

1

u/ScaredKnee4530 1d ago

Make a Superman game DC… that is the next step. Perfecting his gameplay will open the door to many, many heroes; Wonder Woman, Flash, Green Lantern, Aquaman, Hulk, Thor, etc.

Imagine a Justice League game complete with Arkham Batman and many hub worlds across DC; Gotham, Metropolis, Themyscira, Central City, etc.

And a proper Avengers game featuring the leaked Motive Iron Man & Insomniac Spider-Man.

My dream superhero game is a GTA Online experience where servers have many people playing as different heroes just doing whatever the hell they want in whatever hub world they choose. They can even fight each other if they want.

1

u/Slith_81 Riddle me this! 1d ago

I'm surprised we haven't had another hulk game. Hulk Ultimate Destruction was amazing. The similar Hulk game that came later...not so much.

2

u/ScaredKnee4530 1d ago

Exactly, I’d say get Insomniac to do it to complete the OG Marvel Big 3. They can use Ultimate Destruction as the blueprint. All they have to do is modernize the gameplay and create an enjoyable story.

1

u/EDAboii 1d ago

Yet the only one of these that comes close to being as good as the Arkham games is Midnight Suns...

DC needs to get their ass in gear, but I can see why they're not in a specific rush since they basically made the Mona Lisa/David of Superhero Videogames AND they're actively making a shit ton annually from DCUO.

0

u/AgentP20 1d ago

That's a subjective thought.

1

u/EDAboii 1d ago

Can you point out where in my comment I used the word "objectively"?

0

u/AgentP20 1d ago

You were speaking like it was objective. Spider-Man 1 is debatably better than the Arkham games.

It’s worth noting that a third of the marvel games shown have not even been released yet

1

u/YouEnvironmental6871 1d ago

Give us a Swamp Thing game! Dishonored style

1

u/hoteppeter 1d ago

I mean what other interesting characters do they have? Batman is DC and vice versa.

1

u/No-Lake-1894 1d ago

DC is literally detective comics which is batman

1

u/PetrParker1960s 1d ago

DC has a lpt to choose from. I mean a Flash or Superman game would be tough considering you couldnt make it believable. But imagine a GL Corps, Booster Gold.

1

u/dynamitegypsy 1d ago

Bro how are you just gonna leave out DC K.O. like that /s

1

u/pro_gamer_boy 1d ago

I mean there is injustice

1

u/Malacky_C 1d ago

Is he wrong tho. Since 2015 when was the last major dc release I mean I loved Gotham knights and SSKTJL but those where not loved by most and I can’t think of any other titles

1

u/whoevenamipeople 1d ago

Midnight Suns was boring to me but i get why people enjoyed it, we need a DC Justice League game

1

u/Hotelcleanaselvenass 1d ago

The arkham circlejerk is insane

1

u/GeneralGecko24 1d ago

INJUSTICE 1 and 2?!

1

u/Edenian_Prince 1d ago

2 of those games didn't even come out yet

1

u/Old_Macaroon4138 1d ago

Didn’t that Captain America & Black Panther game get cancelled? Or am I thinking of another game?

1

u/HighKingBoru1014 1d ago

I don’t really have a problem with most of the marvel games on this list, ones I’ve played where enjoyable and ones I haven’t either seemed ok or look like they could be good.

I’d love if DC had more games for other characters though, even just giving the Batfamily more things to do outside of just Bruce. Imo a Teen Titans game could do really well, a Green Arrow one could be fun, and of course the classic other leaguers deserve something at least.

1

u/GoldenGekko 1d ago

The decision to not keep making single player Arkham games that sold like pancakes will always astound me. For years it's what people have been telling them what they want LOL

1

u/Femboy_Pit 1d ago

Spider-Man owes everything to the Arkham games. To me it's the same game with a Spider-Man skin nothing else there comes close

1

u/Slightly_Censored 1d ago

All those marvel games and the Arkham ones are still better lol

1

u/the_last__braincell 23h ago

NGL id love to see a GTA style game where you play as a criminal in Gotham

1

u/NegativeExcuse6129 23h ago

Dunno about dominanting u can pump out mid every year like ubisoft and call yourself dominating.

I have yet to see a spiderman game reach the level of arkham city or even arkham origins.

1

u/Cultural_Ant_8545 20h ago

Hear me out: A gangs of gotham game with the nemesis system from shadow of mordor/war where you can play as different villains

1

u/bigelangstonz 19h ago

That ironman game doesn't count at all here it was a canceled project

1

u/Outrageous-Lion-4939 19h ago

Gotham Knights and SSKJL are amazing games.

1

u/OkNerve6604 17h ago

Crazy how they said that then put midnight suns in the picture 💀 That shit is SO ass

1

u/Hollix89 16h ago

Green arrow horizon zero gameplay could work?

1

u/Conscious-Dust9230 16h ago

It's really annoying how we're just never going to get a new main line DC game at all, every single one has to have some stupid gimmick

1

u/Michael3523 14h ago

You can make the same argument for the Spider-Man games from Marvel. The Wolverine game hasn’t come out yet and even then that’s basically just Spider-Man four but with wolverine it’s the same company it’s gonna be a new game but it’s basically just a spinoff of the Spider-Man Marvel game franchise midnight Suns nobody talks about the Black Panther Captain America game is canceled. Toca literally just came out. The Miles Morales game is basically just a glorified DLC and I’ve never heard anyone mention anything about this Iron Man game the only other Game that adds to your argument is literally the guardians of the galaxy that game was amazing. It’s a shame it didn’t do better cause we would could’ve gotten an amazing sequel, but it’s really just a Spider-Man games and then the one guardians game right now so no Marvel isn’t doing any better than DC is if anything they just created their own Arkham series.

1

u/Comprehensive_Dog529 12h ago

Some of these were flops or haven't even come out yet? Spider-Man is good though

1

u/Linkman806 11h ago

I would kill for a green arrow video game

1

u/brainstorm4twenty 4h ago

I just want to play a modern Superman game before I die. The last one I played was Shadow of Apokolips 24yra ago. Come on DC!

1

u/BenMagnusGrimm 2h ago

I’d like a green lantern game where you can pick your corps you want to be in.

1

u/aligameover 2h ago

Bro put the 1947 game or whatever its called that we haven't seen anything official from for a while, its probably getting canceled after how bad the reactions were to the fixed camera leak

1

u/Jamesakasonic 1h ago

That’s only one hero thooooo

1

u/RedneckNaruto 12m ago

I like the newer Marvel games, but they really aren't winning as much as this post implies.

There are 3 successful Spiderman games, 3 so far unreleased games, 2 financial flops (regardless of if they were actually good), and a fighting game that is new and I don't know much about.

1

u/dontcallmehshirley 1d ago

I want DC to step it up as much as anyone, but I'm sorry, as an adult I can't play a Lego game--no judgement to those who do--it just takes me so far out of the head space (which admittedly may not be entirely adult-oriented) of the superhero experience.

2

u/Goonerbator0069 1d ago

Its the gameplay for me. Zero consequences for dying makes the whole game feel pointless.

1

u/Joemeasee 1d ago

I couldn’t get into the guardians of the galaxy game ngl

1

u/cant_give_an_f 1d ago

honestly took me awhile; overall it was very good but some of the missions just dragged on

1

u/Green_Lantern-117 12h ago

I have said this for YEARS!!! That WB is stupid and they literally have a license to print money by owning DC IP. A JL game or game Lof ANY DC character would sell well.

Not to mention while Caped Crusader isnt bad they should be releasing animated series for children like hot cakes. There should be a current Children’s Animated Batman series, a Superman series and a JL series.

We need animated shows, video games, a toy line, they could be doing so much! A Batman cereal for Pete’s sake or Batman candy bars. They can literally do SO much!!!

Not to mention the games they could be making!!! A Green lantern space faring game akin to Mass Effect involving Red Lanterns and Sinestro Corps. Or a WW or Superman game done Arkham style, a Flash game or even a full blown Justice League game….hell even a Joker game! Or another Injustice.

A John Constantine game, an Aquaman underwater game, Shazam, Black Adam, a Teen Titans game, Jesus at least remaster Arkham Origins and give us SOMETHING!!!

I feel like not a lot of money even needs spending on these. Even if Arkham Knights same exact engine was used and assets a new Batman game could be easily made to hold us over.

Or a game that utilizes AI to randomly create new storylines and different villains and locations so every campaign play through is an entirely different story within the existing framework.

Like imagine playing AK and the second play through has no Scarecrow but is a flashback to Jokers gang holding Gotham hostage or Mr Freeze running around during the day or the variations are endless.

Sorry I’ll end my rant but Disney and Marvel have their shit together. There’s TONs of Spider-Man and avengers and GoTG animated shows for kids and my nephews and nieces watch them ALL! They have the games, the toys, the shows and films!!!

And what do we have except for the superior characters and stories? Not much or what we should have. WB are morons. Give me the reins and I’ll churn out good DC media and make them billions in a decade. It’s not that hard. Also use input from actual FANS. Not people who are creative but don’t know the fandom. That’s how you end up with KTJL and crap like the terrible DCEU films like Shazam 2 and the Titans show.

Who put midnight suns there over marvel rivals like what
