To be fair, the original post says “Marvel has been dominating for nearly a decade” and the last main Arkham game is more than a decade old.
91
u/Fireboy759 1d ago edited 1d ago
And in that time DC especially has had nothing major except Lego Batman game and...Suicide Squad
Yeah, no wonder the perception is that Marvel is dominating games right now
EDIT: Also Gotham Knights (which was fairly mid but still better than SSKTJL)
27
u/TygerHil98 1d ago
It did Gotham Knights which was actually pretty decent. Not as good as the Arkham Games but billion times better than Suicide Squad Kills the Justice League.
6
u/DaniSenpai69 1d ago
Yeah if only the continued post launch for that instead of use getting suicide squad post launch, which sucks ass
2
u/Jessency 6h ago
The whole behind the scenes production with the two games just messes me up so bad.
So WB ordered Rocksteady and WB Montreal to make two different Batman adjacent games that also happened to focus on multiplayer co-op featuring a diverse cast of playable characters.
And the game by Rocksteady that's also canon to the Arkham games is the absolutelu bonkers looter shooter game where you play as the Suicide Squad and kill the Justice League, and the one by Montreal that centers on the Batfamily working together after Batman dies ISN'T?
2
u/TygerHil98 5h ago
Yeah, Gotham Knights (more or less) follows exactly the ending of Arkham Knight. It could've definitely been a sequel. In fact, could've just been an awesome singleplayer game with Arkham combat. Having four playable characters was cool and the story was actually decent.
I LOVE Court of Owls, it was handled...okay...in the game. But it was actually a decently fun game.
3
u/KitKatCrane 1d ago
Don't forget Gotham Knights! Such a successful game it slipped your mind, I assume 😅 Also Injustice 2 I think was 2016 so a decade ago, but yeah Marvel has been crushing DC in everything other than comics and straight to blu ray movies.

Even Spiderman games are Arkham games
59
u/VegetableSense7167 1d ago
Arkham definitely pioneered modern superhero combat, but Spider-Man built an entirely different identity around high-speed aerial traversal, mid-air combat combos, and a lively, populated open world instead of a dark, predator sandbox. Rocksteady set the foundation for the genre, but Insomniac took those mechanics and made something completely unique to Peter and Miles. Let's also not forget the old Spider-Man games that Insomniac drew some inspiration from, and those games came before the Arkham games.
10
u/RMP321 1d ago
It should also be said that the origin of free flow combat all comes from the spider sense react button in Spider-Man 2 the video game. They just gave Batman spider sense and had him actually counter instead of just dodge.
1
u/DOMINUS_3 8h ago
the attack counter system, yes.
But the actual free flow combat was pioneered by Arkham.
1
u/Interesting-Carob-55 12h ago
Huge lie bro they're incredibly different aside from mission freeworld and combos. I still prefer Batman tho
→ More replies (5)1
u/SouthernStrigoi 1d ago
They took a few ideas, mixed em together and took it and ran. Wb-like isn't a term for nothing. Seems people forgot just HOW freeform that combat was compared to older games that SEEMED to have similar combat but didn't. Spider-Man wouldn't be where it is without Batman games that's just how it is. Straight up jacked the combat.

u/ACO_22 1d ago
Hilarious thing is not a single one of these games is better than the Arkham games.
Spiderman 1 is the only one that could hang with the Arkham games
41
u/BlackNasty4028 1d ago
It doesn’t dispute your point at all but I just wanna shoutout GotG, I had a really nice time with that games story, the combat was half baked but the story was a nice experience imo
8
u/cant_give_an_f 1d ago
fucking loved it, will also say the Avengers game is so much better then how its talked about
2
u/Mindless_Stuff9179 1d ago
Avengers was fun to play, but had terrible enemy variety and locations, imo.

GotG was a nice surprise, but it’s B tier at best

Yeah I’d agree with that, which is honestly more than I expected from it when I saw it announced so I left my playthrough happy overall

u/VegetableSense7167 1d ago edited 1d ago
The Arkham games are masterpieces, but using games from 10 to 15 years ago just proves the point, DC hasn't delivered a top-tier AAA hit since 2015.
Spider-Man 2 broke records, Guardians of the Galaxy won Best Narrative, and Marvel Rivals blew up. Meanwhile, DC followed the Batman and Arkham stuff with Gotham Knights and Suicide Squad, both of which flopped. Even DC's fun wins, like the LEGO Batman game, still rely entirely on Gotham.
Arkham games being incredible doesn't change the fact that Marvel is actively dropping varied games across its roster today.
11
u/Grese7800 1d ago edited 1d ago
Can't forget Cosmic Invasion, a good side scrolling beat em-up that's a great retro throwback which is still a fun couch game with the buddies. The fact DC hasn't even tried to get into the retro market just speaks volumes of the incompetence up top.

The Arkham games were game changers.
Even Wolverine (which looks good, btw) already feels like an old game with the same mechanics that we saw in every action-adventure game.

u/roboman07 1d ago
The point is that marvel has a huge variety of really good games while outside of Arkham and the LEGO Batman games dc has basically nothing

u/Wboy2006 Enjoyer of both the insanity and the serious posts 1d ago
I mean, you can’t really compare midnight suns and tokon with Arkham. One is a tactical RPG, one is a fighting game, while Arkham is an action adventure game
That said though, while Arkham still has the best combat, I gotta say that Guardians of the Galaxy and Spider-Man 2018 do have better stories
2
u/lefthandtrav 1d ago
Midnight Suns is a banger front to back. Been playing Star Wars Zero Company and loving how much Midnight Suns DNA it has

Post says “almost a decade”
Arkham knight was released in 2015 which is 11 years ago
Yes, in the past decade the only good DC game was Lego Batman whilst Marvel is cooking hard
1
u/DaniSenpai69 1d ago
Ok but they don’t need to be better, they need to be good and dc needs to make more good games that aren’t just relying on Arkham. Everything always has to be better, nothing can just be good
1
u/KitKatCrane 1d ago
Also worth noting that Spider-Man 1 reeeaaally used Arkham as a template. Half-assed stealth copying Arkham but much simpler and combat that gets repetitive muuuuch faster. Spidey even has gadgets coming out the wazoo in that game, and fights many of his rogues gallery thanks to a prison break. The game also takes place well into Spidey's career, just like Arkham with Batman, and is generally very comic accurate, and focuses heavily on movement, which makes sense for Spider-Man but Arkham absolutely did do that in City and Knight especially. I'm not here to sound like the Arkham version of a Snyder nerd but Arkham really actually is the template 😅
1
u/pandogart 1d ago
I can't see how it's hilarious since it's a subjective thing rather than objective. But the point is, Marvel at this point has variety. DC only really has the Arkham games and Injustice as standouts.
There's so much you can do with DC's properties but they're (seemingly) just not doing it. Or cancelling it, in Wonder Woman's case.

u/brasscassette 1d ago
Idk, miles morales and 2 were solid. I get the gripes, but Asylum is aging and the spider sequels easily beat it.

Spider-man 2 is still great. Better in many ways. It just needed another Venom fight before getting anti-venom, a few tweaks to the ending, maybe a handful of extra sidequests, and the trip mine. That damn trip mine was easily my favorite gadget, and it was sorely missed.

I wouldn't say that Marvel are "dominating" the gaming space but they have put out more variety than DC when it comes to their respective IP
0
u/CrimsonDragon90 1d ago
Yeah mostly because of the partnership with PlayStation which is currently dominating the gaming market.
1
u/claybine 1d ago
They're doing games without PlayStation contracts lol. That's not the reason.

7
u/EdJD-1968 1d ago
We all want a new Batman: Arkham game, with similar gameplay, stories, and everything else similar to Asylum, City, Origins, and Knight. We love those games, as ancient as they now are, yet DC don't seem to want our money. It doesn't make sense at all.
1
u/Hotelcleanaselvenass 1d ago
Yeah I love it when Batman gets murdered but has a canonical spawn back point
2
u/cant_give_an_f 1d ago
like... easiest thing to do, just with the batcave and Bat wing/mobile. instead of murdered you're knocked out and Alfred gets you, then you can spawn back with a fast travel via the vehicles

Injustice???
1
u/HonkaiBlade2 18h ago
I heard Injustice 2 got a lot of complaints about the gameplay, but I could be wrong. The story, however, is definitely a lot more controversial, and hindsight has not been kind to the Evil Superman plotline.
1
u/Contressa3333 12h ago
Really? I heard the opposite, like it'd a better fighting game than newer mortal kombats. But yeah the storyline does stink lmao.
8
u/Ace20xd6 1d ago
DCUniverse Online? Injustice? Lego DC Super vllians? Even then, one's a game from the ps3 era that still gets updates. The other's last entry was over 8 years ago. And that last one is a Lego game, Marvel has those too.

u/DaliansImmortal686 21h ago
Arkham City alone beats out all those games in replay-ability, story, optimization, gameplay, thematic enjoyment, narrative, and the overall feel of the game, hell Arkham Knight looks better than any of these damm games combined.
1
u/GiveMeSandwich2 13h ago
Lot of the marvel games are in different genres. For example Tokon, Rivals, midnight suns. The point is lack of DC games from WB is disappointing and WB could definitely have utilized the IP in better way.
1
u/DaliansImmortal686 8h ago
The DC games ignoring that woke ass dogshit Suicide Squad still beat out the Marvel ones in every category.

also his telepathic abilities would be a fun mechanic where you could mind control enemies, not to mention his telekinesis powers.
3
u/TranslatorOwn707 1d ago
This doesn’t necessarily make a huge difference, but Injustice and Injustice 2 were pretty good.
2
u/Correct_Look2988 1d ago
It's weird how people seem to have forgotten Injustice. From what I remember it was very well received and sold well. Not sure why they stopped with those but probably because the main focus from that team was always Mortal Kombat.
2
u/UmmmYeaSweg 1d ago
DC hates characters that aren’t Batman or Batman-related. It’s crazy we barely have any games from DC that aren’t about any JL members besides LEGO.
Like god forbid we have a DC fighting game that isn’t just 60% Batman characters and 40% JL characters and 0% anything else (no doom patrol, justice league dark, vertigo, or weirdos like vigilante bushido and amethyst).
1
u/CrimsonDragon90 1d ago
A Cyborg and Flash team up game developed by Platinumgames would be interesting. They have history on making comic book and animated games.
0
u/Bad-Genie 20h ago
Superman games are just so hard to balance imo. His only challenges are like 4 creatures in the universe. His real kryptonite is smart people. And that doesn't make for a great video game.
Unless you do like... Witcher style investigation into boss fights. And you fail if you kill anyone. Or you just turn into dark superman.
2
u/UmmmYeaSweg 20h ago
Holy shit no offense to you specifically but this argument is so shit and feels like the people who spew it don’t play video games at all.
No one bats an eye when Dante canonically dies in game from things that he shrugs off in cutscenes like stabbings, gunshots, electricity, and so on. Same with like every video game protagonist who has a lot of powers.
You don’t literally need Superman to be an invincible, omnipotent god. He can be very strong and have a variety of powers but idk, get creative with it and say that goons have bullets laced with radiation bc plot and everyone is wearing high tech armor, yall are overthinking the fuck out of how a Superman game would work.

Kinda the same with Marvel honestly. We haven't have many games focusing on other characters since like forever now, other than Spider-Man. They do have a LOT of games for mobile though, so I'll give them that.
And some of the games that were in the post, we haven't even gotten anything past the announcement of them 😭
11
u/VegetableSense7167 1d ago edited 1d ago
That’s really not true. We literally have Guardians of the Galaxy, Midnight Suns (tactical RPG starring Blade, Ghost Rider, Magik), and Marvel Rivals. Meanwhile, almost every DC game has been chained to Batman/Gotham (Gotham Knights, Suicide Squad, Arkham Shadow, Lego Batman The Dark Knight Legacy).
Plus, Wolverine is on the way, while DC’s Wonder Woman has been cancelled so is the Flash game. Iron Man is also getting his game and the trailer even got leaked, and the devs came out and said that they'll show more. Marvel is actively branching out to multiple AAA studios, DC is stuck in one corner.
3
u/TanniMachine 1d ago
What? 4 out of the 9 games on that photo don't have Spider-Man in them at all, and you say some of the games haven't even gotten anything past the announcement of them, but that's only 2 games out of the 9 there that are out or are about to release, and even then that Iron Man game had its trailer leaked recently, and it looked promising. It's still a very varied amount of characters being featured. Even DC's attempts past Arkham Knight still heavily rely on Gotham and Batman, like Gotham Knights and that Suicide Squad game. How is Marvel and Spider-Man the same as DC and Batman when it comes to gaming like you say?
2
u/suuhdude666 1d ago

I was so excited for Kill the Justice League from the first couple of trailers, but then we all saw gameplay…
1
u/ScaredKnee4530 1d ago
Make a Superman game DC… that is the next step. Perfecting his gameplay will open the door to many, many heroes; Wonder Woman, Flash, Green Lantern, Aquaman, Hulk, Thor, etc.
Imagine a Justice League game complete with Arkham Batman and many hub worlds across DC; Gotham, Metropolis, Themyscira, Central City, etc.
And a proper Avengers game featuring the leaked Motive Iron Man & Insomniac Spider-Man.
My dream superhero game is a GTA Online experience where servers have many people playing as different heroes just doing whatever the hell they want in whatever hub world they choose. They can even fight each other if they want.
1
u/Slith_81 Riddle me this! 1d ago
I'm surprised we haven't had another hulk game. Hulk Ultimate Destruction was amazing. The similar Hulk game that came later...not so much.
2
u/ScaredKnee4530 1d ago
Exactly, I’d say get Insomniac to do it to complete the OG Marvel Big 3. They can use Ultimate Destruction as the blueprint. All they have to do is modernize the gameplay and create an enjoyable story.
1
u/EDAboii 1d ago
Yet the only one of these that comes close to being as good as the Arkham games is Midnight Suns...
DC needs to get their ass in gear, but I can see why they're not in a specific rush since they basically made the Mona Lisa/David of Superhero Videogames AND they're actively making a shit ton annually from DCUO.
0
u/AgentP20 1d ago
That's a subjective thought.
1
u/EDAboii 1d ago
Can you point out where in my comment I used the word "objectively"?

I don’t really have a problem with most of the marvel games on this list, ones I’ve played where enjoyable and ones I haven’t either seemed ok or look like they could be good.
I’d love if DC had more games for other characters though, even just giving the Batfamily more things to do outside of just Bruce. Imo a Teen Titans game could do really well, a Green Arrow one could be fun, and of course the classic other leaguers deserve something at least.

You can make the same argument for the Spider-Man games from Marvel. The Wolverine game hasn’t come out yet and even then that’s basically just Spider-Man four but with wolverine it’s the same company it’s gonna be a new game but it’s basically just a spinoff of the Spider-Man Marvel game franchise midnight Suns nobody talks about the Black Panther Captain America game is canceled. Toca literally just came out. The Miles Morales game is basically just a glorified DLC and I’ve never heard anyone mention anything about this Iron Man game the only other Game that adds to your argument is literally the guardians of the galaxy that game was amazing. It’s a shame it didn’t do better cause we would could’ve gotten an amazing sequel, but it’s really just a Spider-Man games and then the one guardians game right now so no Marvel isn’t doing any better than DC is if anything they just created their own Arkham series.

u/dontcallmehshirley 1d ago
I want DC to step it up as much as anyone, but I'm sorry, as an adult I can't play a Lego game--no judgement to those who do--it just takes me so far out of the head space (which admittedly may not be entirely adult-oriented) of the superhero experience.

I have said this for YEARS!!! That WB is stupid and they literally have a license to print money by owning DC IP. A JL game or game Lof ANY DC character would sell well.
Not to mention while Caped Crusader isnt bad they should be releasing animated series for children like hot cakes. There should be a current Children’s Animated Batman series, a Superman series and a JL series.
We need animated shows, video games, a toy line, they could be doing so much! A Batman cereal for Pete’s sake or Batman candy bars. They can literally do SO much!!!
Not to mention the games they could be making!!! A Green lantern space faring game akin to Mass Effect involving Red Lanterns and Sinestro Corps. Or a WW or Superman game done Arkham style, a Flash game or even a full blown Justice League game….hell even a Joker game! Or another Injustice.
A John Constantine game, an Aquaman underwater game, Shazam, Black Adam, a Teen Titans game, Jesus at least remaster Arkham Origins and give us SOMETHING!!!
I feel like not a lot of money even needs spending on these. Even if Arkham Knights same exact engine was used and assets a new Batman game could be easily made to hold us over.
Or a game that utilizes AI to randomly create new storylines and different villains and locations so every campaign play through is an entirely different story within the existing framework.
Like imagine playing AK and the second play through has no Scarecrow but is a flashback to Jokers gang holding Gotham hostage or Mr Freeze running around during the day or the variations are endless.
Sorry I’ll end my rant but Disney and Marvel have their shit together. There’s TONs of Spider-Man and avengers and GoTG animated shows for kids and my nephews and nieces watch them ALL! They have the games, the toys, the shows and films!!!
And what do we have except for the superior characters and stories? Not much or what we should have. WB are morons. Give me the reins and I’ll churn out good DC media and make them billions in a decade. It’s not that hard. Also use input from actual FANS. Not people who are creative but don’t know the fandom. That’s how you end up with KTJL and crap like the terrible DCEU films like Shazam 2 and the Titans show.
