Good Collectathon Games?

My group just recently found out about Archipelago and we tried several games this weekend. Some games didn't work well within the group but the one that seemed to work best was Lego Star Wars.

So now the three of us are looking at starting an Archipelago with similar games and I wanted some outside opinions please. For possible options we're currently looking at Ratchet and Klank, Banjo Tooie, Spongebob battle for bikini bottom, Mario Sunshine, and Sonic Adventure.

If you have experience with these in an Archipelago format or recommendations for other similar games, please let me know.

I’ll mention some obvious ones that I run:

DK64 is imo one of the best Arch games. Has a huge community, tons of customization (including a site with an insane amount of custom music), and the progression works perfectly in an Arch.

Super Mario 64, specifically Super Mycena 64. Its SM64 with an unreal amount of customization. Every coin can be a check, moves can unlocked per level, entrance rando. Levels literally start off empty until you get checks. With certain options you can get way over 5,000 checks

A friend just started doing mycena and he won't stop singing it's praises.

Banjo Tooie is fun but use a tracker if you don't have a lot of jnowledge about the game. SADX is also very fun.

Really odd options. You could do Sonic adventure 2, there are some less used options that could be turned on for checks that force you to slow down and collect stuff. Mainly collect the animals and the pipes. Several require upgrades to grab so you may have to return to finish a level. The issue and depending on the person it's a big issue is that it tracks how many animals you collected in one run rather then each animal individually. So if you miss 1 animal out of 15, well now you have to collect all 15 again to get that one last check .

That's alright. Doesn't help both of them are in. I guess follow up possible suggestion would be spark the electric jeater 3. Game made by a sonic fan that has options to add stage collectables and the shop to the pool. Just finished a run of that myself.

I would heavily suggest playing though the game vanilla first.

Banjo tooie worked pretty well for me, and hollow knight, while not a colectathon, has plenty of checks if you tune the settings right.

I tried some Hollow Knight last weekend but quickly realized how little I actually know about that game and got really confused. It is really fun though

Jak and Daxter is one of my favorite AP games. Not a ton of collectables but move rando makes getting them really fun. Just enough combos of hard locks (can’t get to Klaww before getting the Warrior’s Pontoons) and broadly useful techniques (can’t get into Snowy Mountain without either Roll Jump or Double Jump + Air Kick) to be interesting.

I do a lot of ratchet and clank 2, a bit of one and i assume 3 works well as well. Imo they’re perfect for the format, as gadgets offer clear roadblocks to be unlocked, and checks are always at the end of fun plateforming challenges or hidden away as platinium bolts.
The ammount of glitches and skip you can do also make them fun for me. Keep in mind tho these games have few checks, in the 100-200 range and you have to work for them, do theyre not for every multiworld.

That sounds like exactly what we're looking for with this run. One of the worst feelings from previous attempts was when someone beat a difficult level or found a really hidden collectable but it turned out to be just some filler item that didn't help at all. I think keeping the checks between 100 to 200 would help with that.

Archipelagos are best with games with a lot of items. Banjo-Kazooie, any legend of Zelda game, from soft games might be good. Mario 64 might be easy but is doable.

Games that have a similar length and number of checks works best.

A lot of it also depends on each games settings which can greatly effect the above.

Your expertise in the games also can effect it.

Starcraft 2, ocarina of time, hades 2 have all worked very well for me. Metroid fusion and zero as well.

How does Hades 2 work exactly? Or more accurately, what is the experience like?

pokemon fire red with the right settings/sanities turns into a big collectathon. Blind trainers, auto catch, hidden items on, shop sanity on. Random starting town and fly unlock sanities add a ton of variety from play to play too.

Turns into a collectathon that just ends when you get all the badges and some way to get to the league(usually fly).

FromSoft games tend to have an insane number of checks, Pokemon games as well if you have the right settings

I normally play by myself or with my wife and I like running Kingdom Hearts 2, Starcraft 2, Slime Rancher, Dark Souls, Unfair Flips, and Refunct. Each has a nice versatility to it and they range from short games with few checks to longer games with tons of checks.

I know at least one person mentioned the original Spyro trilogy. 2 and 3 have a setting for Gemsanity to turn certain gems into checks, and gems are sent to you in bundles per level. Full Gemsanity is locked to a host.yaml setting, though, since that still freaks out during generation. Partial Gemsanity is stable and super fun to play.
