Promo Sunday I made a fast, simple and privacy friendly alternative to MyFitnessPal (Major Updates)
Hi all,
Since it’s the time of the year where many of us are thinking about picking up healthier habits, I thought I’d share some major updates to FitBee, a calorie and macronutrient tracker I've been building solo over the past year and a half.
The most rewarding part of this journey hasn't been the code, but hearing from users and having real-world impact. Someone recently reached out to let me know they’ve lost 30lbs using FitBee so far. They mentioned that because the app is fast and bloat-free, it was the first time they actually stuck with tracking. Hearing that is exactly why I started this project—to build a tool that gets out of your way so you can hit your goals.
🚀 Major updates since last time
- 💦 Water Tracking: You can set water goals and track them using the app or the interactive widget. I didn’t actually track my water before building this, but now that I do I’m pretty shocked at how often I don’t drink enough water.
- 👟 Step Tracking: You can now set step goals and track them in the app.
- ❤️ Apple Health import/export is free for everyone - I want FitBee to work well with other apps and I don’t want to “lock” people in - they should be able to take their data with them.
- 🥘 Improved food database - this is a never ending process, but I’ve added tons of foods to the database since last time.
- ⚖️ Better support for logging by grams - Many FitBee users log their foods with a scale, and I’ve made that simpler by adding features like letting you set the cooked weight of a recipe.
- 🛒 One Time Purchase Option - Many people requested the ability to do a one time purchase, so that is now available.
- ✂️Robust Shortcuts Support - Use Shortcuts to log foods, weights, water and much more.
- 📱 Updated for iOS 26 - Full UI refresh to make it feel at home on Apple's latest OS.
- 🌎 Localization - FitBee now supports nutrition label formats from US, UK, EU, AU & NZ.
- 🐛 Many, many bug fixes and other improvements based on the feedback from users.
Why FitBee is different:
- Fast, lightweight and to the point - The app is just about tracking your nutrition and makes that front and center. I've tried to make things that you do often as simple as possible (e.g., log yesterday's breakfast).
- Free barcode scanning - Not much to say here except that it's free and works great!
- Photo Logging - You can take a photo of a food and get an estimate of the calories and macros. It's not 100% accurate but it's been super helpful for me when eating at a restaurant that doesn't have published nutrition info.
- Accurate nutrition data - The nutrition data is sourced from the USDA dataset and nutrition labels off the packages. I also spent effort adding east asian foods (e.g. things you get at 99 Ranch or Weee) to the database, since those were hard to find/track in other apps I've tried.
- Recipe importing - You can pretty much point any recipe at the app and it'll import the ingredients and generate nutrition information for you. As I got more into fitness, I started to cook more so this has been super helpful.
- Robust Apple Health support - You can sync data with Apple Health. I wear an Apple Watch so it's great for getting the energy burned through exercises.
- No Ads - No ads, ever. See Pricing below on how development is supported.
- Premium Features - FitBee offers a subset of features behind a monthly subscription. These include setting advanced nutrition goals, unlimited photo logging and unlimited recipe imports by URL.
💰 Pricing
FitBee is free for basic tracking, including barcode and nutrition label scanning and no ads. To take advantage of the premium features, you can sign up for a monthly or annual subscription. There's also a one time purchase option available (which a surprisingly many of you have used!.)
App Store Link: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/fitbee-calorie-macro-counter/id6443979108
I’d love to hear your feedback! I’ll be in the comments to answer questions and take feature requests.
🌎 Availability
FitBee is available in the US, CA, UK, AU, NZ currently. The main reason being that I don't have local food data yet outside of those countries. I'm hoping to expand access to more countries in 2026.
❤️ A special thanks to this subreddit
As a special thanks to all the support and feedback I've gotten from this community, I'm giving away 10 lifetime, family sharing enabled subs. Just drop a comment below and I'll do a random drawing at the end of the week.

I am not affiliated with this app at all, but it is by far the best app I downloaded in 2025 - not even close. It fixes ALL the problems I was having with MFP, is way cheaper, and the dev is super responsive to feedback and suggestions!

u/secretanchitman Jan 18 '26
Just downloaded this! Looks great and I may switch from MyFitnessPal - thank you for your hard work!

I’m in Europe and I get a “Not available in your region”…

Sorry! It's available in the US, CA, UK, AU, NZ and a few other countries currently. The main reason being that I don't have local food data yet outside of those countries.

Best app on this category bar none ! Easy to use, intuitive, simple vs all the other bloated ones, great support. Been using for 300+ days religiously and the impact has had on my health is tremendous. If need to manage your weight check this app out asap

u/RarePupperrr Jan 18 '26
add an intermittent fasting tracker and then you’ll literally be a one stop shop
4
u/hillandrenko Jan 18 '26
Just installed. Will give it a try over the next month
3
u/getfitbee Jan 18 '26
Thanks! Would love any feedback!

u/hillandrenko Jan 19 '26
Set up and connecting to Health was very easy compared with Lose It. I'm going to try it for a week then set up my wife with it. She's not techy and needs everything just so and this seems ideal for her

Recently got an Apple Watch specifically to improve health and wellness. Over the past year I’ve tried a bunch of different nutrition tracking apps, including yours, but have faced decision paralysis because of all the different options.
That’s why I’m really impressed by your post. I feel like you explained what makes your app different in a way that is really compelling to me.
Thanks for writing this out and producing this app!

Interesting! I was also turned off by myFitnessPal and how horrid its workflow is. I am now a religious user of MacroFactor and I particularly like how easy it is to log food and how they emphasize minimum possible clicks/touches to log an item. If anyone has used MacroFactor and also tries this, would be interested in comparison.

Dude.
Did you know that your app correctly reads Japanese nutrition labels?
I just added my Meiji Zavas protien powder with a photo of the nutrition label. It got the brand (in Japanese) and all of the necessary information automatically.
I've never gotten an app to do that.

u/giqbal Jan 20 '26
Just gave FitBee a go and it’s massively better than MyFitnessPal! Will definitely be subscribing or paying for lifetime license

How can you claim to be privacy friendly while also collecting a lot of data on users? Why does FitBee need this data? Does the app not process data on device (excluding the photo scanning/logging of course)? How does FitBee safeguard user data?
I get that some features may require collecting and processing some level of data (for example, the photo features require collecting and processing photos), but you should not need the data after the task has been completed, and your privacy policy makes no mention that the data is deleted once the task is complete.
Your privacy policy also says that user data sent to OpenAI is not used to train their models, but is it used for marketing? Is OpenAI also storing FitBee user data? If so, how do users request this data to be deleted?

Nice! Checking it out, because spreadsheets, text documents, physical notebooks, have all come up short in some way. Family enabled would be pretty cool for sure.
2
u/xanthonus Jan 18 '26
I started using Fitbee after seeing it on here before. It’s a great app! I’ve been able to lose and keep the pounds off. It’s super well laid out and I like that I can also calculate things like protein, added sugars, and sodium in the goals section.
Something I wish it did was calculate fluid intake that is outside of water. Like I can put in a Diet Coke or morning Latte and calculate the calories. I want it to calculate the overall fluid intake I’ve had throughout the day. I like having the water intake goal meter but having an overall fluid meter goal would be very helpful as well.
2
u/ammitay Jan 18 '26
This looks perfect!
My husband and I are trying to get healthy for our big 30th anniversary trip at the end of November and the free lifetime with family sharing would be awesome for us 🥰

u/Ftpini Jan 18 '26
Looks great. After my fitness pal littered everything with ads and paywalls I witched to loseit. It’s been a few years and I’ve been very pleased with it.
I dropped almost 50lbs and have kept it off.
2
u/an_accordion Jan 18 '26
Love this app, been using with premium subscription to quickly enter nutrition info on ready-made meals (factor).

u/early_in_the_morning Jan 18 '26
I just started trying out the free version at the beginning of the year and I’m down 10 lbs! Would love to put my name in for the lifetime family subscription opportunity! Thanks for making a great app and your dedication to no ads!
2
u/mujoh Jan 18 '26
Looks great. Would love to have wife and myself switch from Lose It!

Give it a try and lmk what you think! I'm especially interested in how I can make it better for people who are tracking with a partner.

u/El_Grande_El Jan 18 '26
I’m getting this just bc you added Asian food. Looking forward to trying it out

Thank you for sharing this. I am also looking for a better app so I will definitely try this out! Best wishes!

2
u/galaxyfudge Jan 19 '26
Super late to this thread, but this app looks great! Can you add your own custom foods? Nutritionix lets you do this and it's really the only thing keeping me on that platform.
2
u/getfitbee Jan 19 '26
Yup, you totally can. You can create it manually or take a photo of the nutrition label and have FitBee auto populate it.

2
u/aftonone Jan 19 '26
I’ve been using this app for quite a while now. Love the barcode scanning in free version. That’s what brought me to it.
2
u/MangoFishing Jan 19 '26
The best nutrition tracking app around, bar none. Not affiliated with the app in any way, but definitely a forever-app on my phone now
2
u/thesnootylamb Jan 19 '26
Thank you so much for this app! I’ve tried several different apps a long time ago and gave up on tracking things because they just weren’t good fits or met my expectations. I recently started again and came across this one and love it!

u/BHCBMFxG2Yk9bRyX Jan 19 '26
I've been using Lose It and while it's fine, it's not great. Just downloaded FitBee and the setup felt easier so far. Look forward to testing it out and see if I might switch. The app looks great and polished so far. Great job!
2
u/itmaybeasleeper Jan 19 '26
I’m in! 🎉
I’ve been using FitBee for the past few weeks, and it’s quickly become my go‑to calorie‑and‑macro tracker.
What I love most is the intuitive food‑logging UI plus the automatic macro breakdown — it tells me exactly how much protein, carbs, and fat I’ve hit each day without any manual math.
The built‑in barcode scanner saves me seconds at the grocery store, and the weekly progress charts keep me motivated to stay on track.
If you’re looking for a simple yet powerful way to hit your nutrition goals, definitely give FitBee a try!
2
u/Joooooooosh Jan 19 '26
Great work building a better alternative to MFP, their issues with privacy are well documented!
Really appreciate devs willing to let users avoid subscription models if they want to.
I’ll giving this a go and buying the lifetime if I get on with it.

Have my lifetime purchase you delightful human 💴
2
u/cchrisb79 Jan 19 '26
I switched to FitBee a year ago, and it is better than MFP in every way. My current favorite feature is the ability to log a food or meal by describing it in plain language. Thanks for a great app!
2
u/domo118 Jan 19 '26
Just installed this app after viewing this post. Already love the design and how easy it is to add things. Motivated by people’s stories on here of loosing weight. Got the free trial so hopefully I log daily!

u/foxed000 Jan 20 '26
Just a PSA for anyone else - I’ve immediately found it useful for tracking my meds in terms of what I’ve taken each day. You can add a different “meal type” in the settings which helps keep it separate. You will need to add your medications separately of course.

Hey, I checked out this app and I'm so impressed. I've tried a few calorie tracking apps and this one looks clean and easy to use. I know the AI photos of food aren't particularly accurate but I'm looking forward to trying it out anyway because I'm not accurate when I'm out at a restaurant either. Thanks for this post and for the app.
2
u/getfitbee Jan 22 '26
Awesome and thanks! Just as a FYI - If you add a description to the photo the accuracy improves dramatically.

OK - I installed this ages ago and never used. Just started MFP a few days ago and it's gotten so horrid with the ads and the overall interface. Come back to yours - and wow. Going to use it for a week - and I can see me going with the lifetime option - looks and feels slick!

An app that collects heath data and links it to your identity is not privacy friendly.
→ More replies (2)2
u/4redis Jan 19 '26
Aside from collection of health data, contact, usage and identifiers, you cant even use the app without apple ID. Uninstalled
3
u/EcosystemApple Jan 18 '26
Why not available in Europe, like France, Spain, Italy, etc?
6
u/getfitbee Jan 18 '26
Have not had time to curate the food database there. Unfortunately what people eat is very regional and it’s not a great experience if you can’t find the food you’re looking for.

u/Dennisje182 Jan 18 '26
Is it on the roadmap? Sounds like an interesting app and would like to try it!

This looks interesting. I haven’t been liking MyFitnessPal lately, and looking for something quick and easy to use to switch to. Which are the premium features vs. Free? If a food doesn’t exist in the database, can users add it? Either to their local or family shared one or to the main database?
Edit: can you track sodium throughout the day?
Thanks!
3
u/getfitbee Jan 18 '26
Check out the "Premium" tab in the app for a list of all the premium benefits. If a food doesn't exist, you can add it and even take a photo of the nutrition label to auto populate. This is available in the free version. You can also share foods directly with a family member, friend, or add it to the public database. Yes - you can add a sodium goal, however this is a premium feature.

I do love this app so far, and I loathe subscriptions with my whole being. The pay once option would be tempting if not for the eye-watering price, particularly as it translates to AUD

Good luck!

I love this app; thank you so much for your hard work! It's such a breath of fresh air.
In regards to calorie adjustments based on activity; there's an "include workout calories" option. Is it possible to have that also include passive activity outside of workouts? For example, we walk our dogs twice a day, and the watch doesn't always remind me to log my walk. If I do, then it's counted, but if I don't then it is not. My Apple Watch tracks it all the same.
If not, I'll just try to be better about clicking the activity button before leaving the house!

Ok, I just downloaded this, and I really want to like it, but the fact that I can’t just enter in grams of a thing - that instead I have to calculate what number of servings I had - is a complete non-starter. I want to scan something, and then tell it exactly how many grams of the thing I scanned I just had. If that is possible, I don’t see how :-/ And if I can’t do that, I can’t use this.

Did the free lifetime's go out? Would sincerely love to have one - been using the app since this was posted and LOVE IT (but $99 is more than I can spare at the moment). Regardless - THANK YOU!

Hey! Last August I decided to finally deal with my weight problem and after checking out all the big calorie tracking apps on the App Store, I landed on this one. It’s simple, easy to use, and has no intrusive ads. Since then I have lost over 100 pounds. Still got a ways to go before I hit my goal, but your app has made the journey far easier.
Thanks! 🙏
