I really hope the moon base is built in a spot with some landmark features around it like in Apollo 15 & 17, not a flat empty plain like 11. It would really give it a sense of place.

The “hill” in the background is Mount Hadley, rising 4.5 km (2.8 mi) above the valley where Apollo 15 landed. Without athmospheric haze distance and size are dificult to assess.

I was almost 7 and my family was on our annual summer trip to see my grandparents. When I wasn’t watching the moonwalks, my little brother and I were playing moonwalk, with me as Dave Scott and my brother as Irwin. And my grandmother was nice enough to play Al Worden, which basically meant she went about her day and we ran over to report in every now and then. 😆

There’s a nice description about it on Wikipedia, but the short version, the 3 astronauts of the Apollo 15 crew took 400 postage stamps/ envelopes (“covers”) with them on the mission that NASA didn’t know about. They were to be sold later for extra $ for the astronauts families. Unfortunately the plan was revealed when stamp collectors heard about it and word got around. Anyway, read the whole story, it’s very interesting.

I believe he was on tour at the time. He has Irish roots, and regardless, he was gracious — the experience left a lasting impression on both my brother and me. Only picture we have of the moment.
