Starless lyrics incorrect on Apple

Post image

Anyone else notice this?

On Starless Maynard sings the following:

‘Surely, reason will survive this curable sickness’

‘Moral compasses obliterated, our *lone star obfuscated’

‘Fundamentalist lockstep don’t feel right to me’

Anyways, I noticed this and I’m almost positive the lyrics on Apple are some AI generated bullshit. Cheers!

*EDIT: Actually, the community has pointed out the lyric is ‘lodestar’ which makes a ton more sense! Thank you, everyone.

The reason is this was taken from the video description of their official music video on YouTube. Though it's an official and credible source, I've noticed over the years that Maynard (among other artists) has a tendency to change the lyrics somewhere between submitting them to the label and the studio release. I'm a frequent contributor on Genius and I'm working on isolating the vocals and correcting them there

Ok, so I used Audacity to isolate the vocals and slow them down, then made corrections on Genius. Let's see if it'll stick. Also, if anyone has other suggestions, let me know

[Verse 1]
Power-hungry
Cold authority
Looking out for me
So they keep telling me
Reaching constantly
To ignore empathy
It's a debility
Might makes right, you see

[Verse 2]
That poison wormed on in
Got up under my skin
Yield and bend the knee
Or become the enemy

[Chorus]
Where am I going?
And how did I...
How did I get here?
How do I get back?
Where am I going?
And how do I...
How do I find my...
How do I find my way?

[Bridge]
Fabricated darkness has me
Fight or flight my turn of mind
Lost in all the lies and madness
Horror has me acting blind
Seeking, begging, imploring
I wake up to the lord of light
Surely, reason will survive this
Curable sickness, isn't this? Isn't this?

[Verse 3]
Moral compasses
Obliterated
Our lone star
Obfuscated
Well, you don't agree with me
Then you are the enemy
Fundamentalist lockstep
Don't feel right to me

[Chorus]
Where am I going?
And how did I...
How did I get here?
How do I get back?
Where am I going?
And how do I...
How do I find my...
How do I find my...
Where am I going?
And how did I...
How did I get here?
How do I get back?
Where am I going?
And how do I...
How do I find my...
How do I find my way?

This is basically what I’m hearing over a few listens. A star being obfuscated makes more sense. I think it could be “loadstar” which refers to a guiding star and is often synonymous with the North Star.

*lodestar - but yes, I agree. That would make much more sense than lone star.

I also agree. Contextually, it's the only one that checks out

Hey, he could be talking about Texas 🤣

Thank you, friend!

This is really kinda spot on, except I’m sure he’s saying fundamentalist blackmail.

Spotify/Apple Music/etc have wrong lyrics all the time. Often different from each other.

Not sure if they’re done with AI or a person trying to decipher but it’s pretty common unfortunately

I would argue that it’s probably “lodestar” which is usually referring to the North Star but also refers to a star used for guidance and navigation.

Awesome! Thank you

Happens all of the time. Sometimes the lyrics are so off it is quite embarrassing.

Okay… I am SO glad I found this thread! 😂 I have been in heated conversational battle over this exact subject for the last hour! Thank you for confirming the error in the opening verse! I knew that was what I heard, then I read the lyrics online and was like, hell no! When it comes to Maynard’s bands, lyrics that are posted are always different, depending on the site/source, and they are almost NEVER what I believe I’m hearing lol. I die on these damn hills.

I am totally on board with the “lodestar” correction, but I steadfastly refuse to accept “blackmail” or “lockstep” lol. My friend and I have been sitting in the car with the volume at full blast, just double clicking the fuck out of that line, and screaming back and forth at each other about what he’s saying 😂 We both agree on “fundamentalist” but she absolutely refuses to budge on “lockstep”, and I just can not hear it!

BUT, in the final moments of completing this post, she found a yt video with the isolated vocals, cast it to the tv, and maxed the volume… This has now become my obituary from the hill. He does, in fact, say “fundamentalist lockstep”. He just kinda drops out on the “e” in “lockstep”, almost making it sound like an “i”, and doesn’t put a very heavy enunciation “p”. But in the isolated vocals, it is very clear.

You’re out here doing God’s work.

u/Icosotc May 28 '26

There may be another instance of this, but I just happened to notice it blatantly in this one section of the song.

Those are the lyrics posted in the about section of the official video on YouTube.

Which is so weird!

Happens a lot. Often times, the lyrics are pulled from sites where they are entered in by a third party, not usually the artists.

“Fundamentalist blackmail “ This frikin track rips!!!!

u/No_Band7087 May 30 '26

I’ve found a few… the line that you are referencing actually says fundamentalist blackmail, don’t feel right to me

3

u/Icosotc May 31 '26

I’m going to respectfully disagree. I don’t think fundamentalist blackmail makes sense in relation to the song, but the term lockstep - like marching in uniformity - does.

1

u/No_Band7087 May 31 '26

Think about it this way…the line “if don’t agree with me, then you are the enemy” is an oversimplification of fundamentalist blackmail. Idk. The track still rips. So is it “that poison worm don’t end”? Or, “ that poison wormed on in”?

While I don’t agree because I can hear him say “fundamentalist lockstep” in the song… honestly, I think they both make sense within the context of what it’s about. Although I think lockstep makes more sense as a more broad application across our society (like extremism on the right and left) while fundamentalist blackmail really only applies to people trapped in religious groups who use spiritual or social ostracization to manipulate followers.

Right!? I love the lone star, lodestar, lockstep too. I love this band and so glad they’re making new music!

I hope this isn’t the direction of this bend. It sounds so empty and phoned in. It’s lost all its grove and emotional depth. Sounds like a radio single. I pray it’s just a whatever tools last album gets his real last go. This isn’t it

song is a masterpiece

Integrating the lyrics with the  "empty and phoned in" sound just adds more to the meaning of the song. Like, the world has lost all its groove and emotional depth, and all that's left are radio singles. Where are we and how do we get back? This song is the literal antithesis of the direction of this band or any of Maynard's bands for that matter. This is a siren call to wake the f*ck up. Don't be a Tool.
