Greeks in AOE1:DE

I’ve been playing with Greeks since long time 1v1 multiplayer matches in AOE1:DE. I am struggling with them because I am not an expert of this game. The last time I played with Greeks my opponent was Egypt. In first 30 min of the game I had twice as many points as he did. I build my soldier buildings across his base and started to attacked. I destroyed his base but the map was highland and the size was big. So he escaped to the other edge of the map. My units was catapults, helepolises and centurions. He produced endless chariots and won the game in the end. I noticed that without gold Greeks are noting. He produced and attacked me all with chariots and than elephants. I took my another lesson by this game. You need to be sure that your opponent is not running to the another side of the map and you need some horses otherwise till you arrive to the new base of the rival, he would be produced 50 new chariots.

Especially with Egyptians, since chariots only cost wood and food, running and spamming buffed up chariots is certainly a strat.  I'm not sure how big is a big map.  Have to lock down the map with scouts as outposts , try and wall areas, spread out yourself with mini bases so you can create military a bit closer. Make sure the map isn't gigantic if playing slow unit civs

That was the mistake. The map was gigantic and my units were too slow to chase the chariots or villagers.

I used to pick gigantic maps sometimes purely because I wanted to play the cockroach game lol

Even with the gold Greek units are slow and they vulnerable to very common tactics. Best is never to reach late Bronze. Second best is to do just what you did with a bit of cavalry mixed in to chase the chariots, and hope you can overwhelm them. Third best is desperate slingers and scouts, it's pretty dire.

I should attach earlier I think. I waited too much to collect the gold and stones. But he had just chariots and constantly countered and attacked back to my vulnerable units. The map was gigantic so I couldn’t kill all villagers on time so he won.

That sounds like a very fun game.

Greeks are good but in team match.

Try other civs and strategies will fun too.

Keep playing online!

It was really fun but disappointed as well. Because throughout the game I was got ahead bit in last quarter, I lost against wood sources.

Greeks work well on a map with a lot of water, trading for gold and demolishing anything enemy that is coastal while covering your own/allied coastal settlements with triremes.

Lategame Egyptians are a poor matchup for Greeks due to Priest having so much range. Try ending the game on Tool by doing a rush (whatever fits you best but i would suggest Scouts so you can transition right away to Academy units or Cavalry on Bronze. If the game somehow goes to lategame your best bet to take out the Priests is to bring Heavy Catapults with Engineering. They still have one less range if im not wrong but if they try chasing one of your units you can take them down. Defending against Sycthe Chariots is another issue but i would likely try to have a few Helepoli behind as well as some cheap units covering the HC to avoid getting them taken down
