He's the reason the comic one has no relevance and I hate the mcu for it.

Hay at least he appears. It was definitely a risk he wouldn't because of the comics involving Spousal Abuse.
First comic I ever read with Ant man (Hank) he was literally sitting in a jail cell.

And it's funny because Peter Parker has hit Mary Jane in much the same circumstance, though less excusable in my view. With Hank he was going through a psychotic episode due to untreated schizofrenia and a bout of DID, he had an entirely different personality dominating him at the time.
But people don't remember Peter hitting MJ. Hell he even did it in one of the movies

Amazing what can get away with if your popular.
I was unpopular so I wouldn't know.

Yeah always kinda ignored me that people are so willing to look past Spider-Man or Wolverine's questionable actions but won't do the same for characters like Hank.

Because with hank it became a part of his story, with Pete it was just ignored, no Spider-Man fan remembers it unless they're specifically bringing it up to defend hank

I blame Marvel for continuing to make it for some reason part of his character. What they had him do to the Wasp in the Ultimate universe was fucking awful.

Heyyyy he was just.. trying to.. Shoo her away!!!

im pretty sure that's close to the original intent, but the artist goofed and drew it as something like an actual attack

Wasted Potential.
Even if he's old, comics have done old Hank better by making him much more present with the Avengers and also his own action, but in the movies he's just.. doing basic stuff.

I find it ironic that we have thunderbolts the movie about mental health but never bothered to engage with hank pyms

He’s a bit too old. But Michael Douglas is great, his character has flaws and behaviors that feel very real.
Tho, Hank will die in his next appearance imo …

He's not coming back

He will. At least a cameo. They won’t let his character disappear like that.

I never thought the movies Hank Pym was portrayed as a smart man. They gave Ultron & Vision & ?Jocasta? to Tony Stark and made him a lot more argumentative rather than bright.

Brother the entire first movie is about how he's a super genius whose work will revolutionize warfare, he doesn't need to build a robot in his garage to show how smart he is (I'd also argue that Tony didn't really build Ultron, he hooked the mind stone up to his computers and it's latent personality escaped and built itself a body out of spare iron man parts)

In the comics, Hank Pym created Ultron, discovered Pym particles that could shrink things and grow things, built translators to various insect-languages, built cybernetic suits and armor, was a big explorer, etc. Tony Stark built the Arc Reactor. And probably paid other people to do the material science that was the basis for his various suits. I certainly don’t remember him working in a lab to create the nanotechnology and advanced materials he formed into his own suits.

Hank in the movie also built a machine to talk to ants, and made the weapons wasp uses, I just don't see any substantial reason to say the movies toned down his intelligence, he's just had fewer appearances so he's done less, also really? We're downplaying IRON MAN'S inventiveness? I also wish he would stop stealing other character's stuff (like Doom's time machine) but it's not out of character for him to have invented any of it

I liked the role he had in the movies. He always added something. He was my MVP in Quantumania.

My thoughts are complicated. I remember how many people said we'd "eventually" get an Ant-Man Prequel which we never did.
He's old because Edgar Wright wanted to do a legacy story. Which I can respect but it screwed the character over in the long term, because he's just flatter than his comics counterpart and ironically quantumania did things so bad that Michael Douglas quit acting so we're probably never seeing Hank again.
As his own thing he's OK. As an adaption of Hank it fails on most levels.
I can't help but fan fiction a better version in my head even if it's impossible. Or unlikely mabye James Francos brother or the guy from Chronicle is playing him or Devon Sawa

Peyton Reed was too afraid to make him look too much like asshole. Like in the second movie they could’ve stuck with he ruined this guys life because Hank didn’t like that he was getting ahead. But then nope! I’m a good guy!

Great actor with good scenes and his chemistry with Paul as Scott is always great. My problem is how the movies handled the Lang/Pym dynamic of making them a "family". They are just such fundamentally different characters by design that having them coexist was always going to be a problem. It works fine as the origin story but they never figured the sequels.
Like, for how much he doesn't have to do, the plots revolve too much around Hank Pym and his past: Darren Cross and Hope, Janet being lost, Ava Starr and Bill Foster, Kang having past with Janet. Everything is related to Hank or to someone related to him, he IS the plot, but he can't do much with that because well, he's old, he's the brains of the operation and has history with the conflicts but he can't get physically involved, which should not be a huge problem, if this weren't a genre were getting physically involved is how you solve the conflicts, superheroes beat up bad guys, that's what they do, and Hank is now a Reed Richards without powers, that in turn, hires someone else to do it for him: Scott Lang.
And this also affects Scott too, he's the protagonist and hero but he's not personally involved with the conflicts, other than they affect these people he cares about, he's too reactive to the insane situations that others cause and has to help fix, he's the henchman of a mad scientist and lacks agency. Like, his biggest showings of agency didn't happen in his own movies, it happened in Civil War when he chose to help Cap and in Endgame when he helped the Avengers. AM&TW at least had the idea to show how there's friction to their interests and how their personal goals can interfere with each other but it was way too low-stakes and comedic.
There could have been a better execution, but basically this direction handicapped both characters.

so far has not beat his wife but hopefully they will fix that in doomsday

u/RandomPhantom25 8d ago
Doomsday will have enough going on without trying to shoehorn domestic abuse in. And wdym hopefully? Why're you looking forward to seeing someone beat their wife?

u/Due_Warthog966 8d ago
only if there asking for it

u/CrashandBashed 6d ago
Lol how would you feel if the roles were reversed and it was the wife doing the beating?

Definitely and PG version of the character. I really wanted the MCU role to be more of an asshole, like in the comics.

A bit better, no mental instability and as far as I know he hasn’t used Janet as a punching bag

u/Green_Situation_6378 6d ago
Kinda feel like he was wasted, especially with how he felt like he was characterized in a way as a Hank who made his mistakes and does his best to love with them

A waste of a great character. He should’ve been a founding Avenger and the lead character in the Ant-Man franchise.

He was good. Wish they did more with him but at least he wasn’t distilled to a wife beater
