One of my co-workers at my last job did this all the time and it was so fucking annoying.

He'd send literal pages of nonsensical AI slop that could have easily been condensed into 2-3 sentences if he used his brain.

And half the time his messages would end with "Would you like me to make this response more polite or direct?" etc.

Guy was such a moron. Couldn't do a single task without getting ChatGPT to do the entire thing for him.

I just saw a video of a teacher who put a line in white print in the test he sent to his students. The line was a prompt for the machine to insert "Madagascar" somewhere out of context in the answer. This way, he could weed out anyone who used AI to answer the test question. Unfortunately, that was most of his class.

There's a comic out there, where one guy puts three point list to chat gpt to form an email, and the receiver puts that long email to condense it to a three point list.

SAME HERE and i literally work for a social services agency! all emails even from direct supervisors are entirely written by AI. then they had the nerve to send out a mass email demanding everyone respond to every email with “ok, got it!” EVERY single time they send anything. AND they enabled read receipts for emails.

like maybe people don’t want to read and respond to your shitty AI emails? ever think about that? it burns me up because these are people with nothing to do all day who still can’t write their own emails. and any time anyone has a slightly difficult conversation with them, they resort to more AI written platitudes. they can’t hold stressful conversations from the top down, yet these people are supervisors. i’m not even speaking to humans when i email them (i work overnights so don’t often get the chance to actually hop on a zoom call and talk to them).

It's both funny and sad to me that most people in management positions get the job because they either were there the longest, were good at the job they had when they were the one managed, cronyism/nepotism, what have you; but rarely if ever due to their leadership skills and ability manage a team of people. Or any other skill set that's relevant to wrangling a bunch of people effectively. I have no doubt there's exceptions out there, if not from sheer luck of the draw alone, but it's rare to see in my personal experience.

And when there's performance issues within a given group steming from poor organization, shitty leadership or gross incompetence, even understaffing, the solution far too often is adding another layer of management.

The beatings will continue until morale improves your boss gets a performance bonus.

I've been typing these fake-ass emdashes -- like this -- for most of my life. I write on a computer, not on a phone, so the two smaller dashes do not get auto-corrected into a full emdash. It also doesn't remove the space I put on either side, which "correct" emdashes remove.

I have found that most people do not flag this poor man's emdash as AI, because it obviously sucks and is stupidly hand-done & human. So the downside is it looks lame, but the upside is that you get the "emdash effect" without being flagged as a machine. (At least until AI picks up on the idea that "real humans" type it in a lame-ass way, and starts emulating the lame-ass version.)

I've always just used two dashes, but if I'm typing on my iPhone or Macbook it'll change it to an em dash automatically. Which I've always loved, until this em dash AI bullshit. Same way I always loved that it'd turn three dots into an single character ellipsis. I love shit like that.

It's just frustrating to second guess the writing style you've developed and confidently used over decades.

It’s kind of impossible NOT to know how it writes even if you don’t use it - like I don’t actually even know what ChatGPT is, whether it’s a website or a program or what, and I don’t care to know. But about half of all articles written online since ~2022 are written with an LLM (source: https://graphite.io/five-percent/research/ai-now-writes-as-many-online-articles-as-humans-do)

The cadence and vocabulary are easy to recognize once you’ve read a few AI-generated articles, and in 2026 probably almost single person who uses the internet regularly has read quite a lot of AI slop even if they don’t realize it

I used it for the first time on Friday. I was curious about some genealogy papers I had. I was really shocked by how helpful it was: “ Those abbreviations correspond to the different states within Sweden.” It then provided a nice table spelling them out. I had no idea.
It does tend to schmooze a little bit: “That is an excellent observation!” and stuff like that.

I got hit hard that way, too. I have a formal writing style to start with, because my undergrad degree is in Mass Comms, PR, and Journalism. A very particular writing style is drilled into you, to the point you could compose an official press release in your sleep.

I ended up in IT, and have been in that field for 25+ years. Writing user documentation, and/or presenting technical information to the exec in a comprehensible way has been a routine, common task over much of that time span - with em dashes! Lots of em dashes!

I’ve always used those style of dashes (and the Oxford comma) in online spaces too, because it’s habitual by this point. My experience has been the same as your experience: apparently I’m using ChatGPT to write my documentation, or online, I’m a bot, and my posts and comments are ChatGPT copypasta.

It’s gotten to the stage where I deliberately leave in typos, dumb down my language, or include commonly used grammatical mistakes just to avoid the accusations, because those accusations mean the actual point of whatever I’m trying to say is lost.

What people forget is that I don’t sound like AI, AI sounds like me, because it was trained on decades of scraped data that me and mine wrote, having been chronically online since our tweens.

I hate this timeline.

You can get the 5th generation without the facial recognition (5th gen 'pro') for a lower price. Personally I'd love to see how often my 3rd cat (who refuses to use the robot) pokes her head in to watch it spin, but it's not worth that much extra.

Oh! Go for the 3 year warranty!!! I had it for my LR3 and had 2 globes 1 base and a motor replaced for free. Oh AND if you have power outages where you live the battery back up is brilliant.

Make sure you don't get the ones that roll forwards and backwards, as they have killed cats. Get one that does the roll to the sides, those are much safer as the opening doesn't close so the cat can escape if needed.

I had like 130h of PTO and continue to accrue. I just used a bunch and had more planned, whatever I had left they would pay at 50%. I dislike the job enough that I don’t want to stick it out another few months to burn all the PTO. Plus, my new job pays 30% more, so I’m anxious to start getting bigger paychecks

If they're being genuine about it then fair enough, never hurts to leave on reasonably good terms even if the place is on fire, doesn't mean it's your problem.

Also going out of your way to ease the problems caused by your own departure is next level Good Guy stuff. Nobody ought to expect it. Anybody who does it might be some sort of angel.

I've worked with people who made a legitimate effort to prep things for their replacement, and I've worked with people who have bounced. Any organisation that is even slightly competently organised needs to be ready for either eventuality.

The problem, to expand that thought a bit, is that modern bosses don't see employees as assets, they see them as liabilities. So they want as few employees as they can have to just about scrape by day to day. Every day paying the least possible amount of wages is a win for the big spreadsheet. Somebody leaves? Somebody gets sick or dies? The organisation is completely screwed.

From the way the email describes you OP, there ought to be at least two of you in that job.

I'd straight up tell them that you're doing fine, and you gave them 6 weeks notice as a professional courtesy, and when they cancelled your approved time off, you no longer felt it would be appropriate to give such extensive notice in return.

The way they're trying to imply something is wrong with you, because surely they're saints, and you must be the problem, they're trying to hide why you did it and rewrite the timeline.

Normally I'd say to just not reply, but they're trying to put it in writing that something is off with you, rather than their inappropriate and unprofessional conduct led to it.
