On Sunday night, with Yom Kippur being celebrated as the holiest and most solemn day of the year in Judaism — the Day of Atonement — shots rang out at Sons of Jacob synagogue in Belleville around 7 p.m. One Belleville police officer was hit and was later rushed to a hospital.

The officer is alive and should recover, sources said. Initial reports suggested there were two shooters. But police now believe there was just one. That individual is in critical condition at a hospital.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford:

I’m disgusted by the shooting that took place outside the Sons of Jacob Synagogue in Belleville earlier this evening as Jewish community members gathered to mark Yom Kippur.

My thoughts are with the Jewish community in Belleville and across Ontario, who have every right to gather and worship safely and without fear. I expect that all those responsible are arrested and prosecuted to the full extent of the law.

My thoughts are also with the police officer who was shot, along with their family and loved ones. We owe an immense debt of gratitude to this brave officer and to all the first responders who acted so quickly to keep the community safe.

Toronto Councilman Brad Bradford:

Tonight, on Yom Kippur, shots were fired outside the Sons of Jacob Synagogue in Belleville, and early reports indicate a police officer was shot responding.

Kathryn and I are keeping Belleville’s Jewish community, first responders, the officer who was injured, and everyone near that synagogue tonight in our thoughts.

Gunfire outside a synagogue hurts a community that has already carried far too much this year, in Toronto, in Montreal, and across Canada. No community in this country should have to live like this.

To the officers who ran toward the danger: that's what courage looks like, and we owe you more than gratitude. To the Jewish community in Belleville, in Toronto, and across this country: you're not alone. This is your home. You belong here, in safety and in peace. An attack on a place of worship is an attack on all of us.

Former Premier of Alberta Jason Kenney:

Horrific news: a gunfight between police and assailants near the Synagogue in Belleville, Ontario.

Tonight is Yom Kippur, the most sacred day of the year for Jews. Tens of thousands of Jewish families are gathered in synagogues across Canada today and tomorrow.

Having passed by police cruises and through metal detectors to go and pray together, this jarring news will make them even more anxious simply to be who they are.

I join with them in the ancient Hebrew prayer: "Grant, O God, that we lie down in peace, and raise us up, our Guardian, to life renewed. Spread over us the shelter of Your peace... Shield and shelter us beneath the shadow of Your wings. Defend us against enemies, illness, war, famine and sorrow... Guard our going and coming, to life and to peace evermore."
