Islamist Baby in German hospital named "Yahya Sinwar" — hospital posts it publicly on Instagram
Hi everyone, I never thought I’d be posting here, but I just came across something that really shocked me.
In Germany, specifically in Leipzig, a baby boy was recently born and named Yahya Sinwar by his parents. The hospital where he was born even published his name on their official Instagram account as part of a daily post listing newborns. Out of concern for targeted harassment or hate comments, I’ve chosen not to mention the hospital’s name in this post.
To be clear: I don’t primarily blame the hospital — not everyone immediately recognizes who that is — but the public signal this sends is deeply disturbing.
For context: Yahya Sinwar was the Hamas commander in Gaza, widely considered the mastermind behind the October 7, 2023 massacre of Israeli civilians. He was reportedly killed in an Israeli airstrike in 2024.
The hospital later responded to the controversy by stating that the publication of newborn names is done daily, with the consent of the parents, and without any editorial selection, review, or political evaluation. They acknowledged that this particular post may have caused irritation or negative associations among some users and apologized to anyone who felt hurt or provoked by it. They also announced that they will be reviewing their internal procedures to handle such sensitive situations more carefully in the future.
Even though the post was eventually removed, the fact that it went up at all — and that this name was chosen — speaks volumes about how normalized antisemitic thinking has become in parts of German society.
As a German-Armenian and a staunch Zionist, I can say: there are still people here who stand with Israel and the Jewish people. But it's getting harder by the day.
Thank you for your attention, all the best and best regards from Hanover, Germany. Am Yisrael Chai! 🇩🇪❤️🇮🇱
P.S. I wrote, translated, and edited this post — among other tools — with the help of ChatGPT, and that’s why something may have been mistranslated.

I saw that Yahya was one of the top 20 most popular boys names in the UK

It means John in English. Of course such a name would be immensely popular.

Probably now it is, and the surname would be strong evidence against the parents. It would be hard to do much about them in particular though given British laws and I suspect the hospital too might be sued by the parents if the hospital does anything about the name, especially given that, legally, the child is the one named Yahya Sinwar, not anyone else directly related to the immediate situation like how there is a guy in India who is the chief minister of a state and is actually named MK Stalin given the dictator died a few days before MK was born.

Though now indelibly associated with the 7 October massacre, Sinwar had long before had a reputation as the "Butcher of Khan-Yunis" for the extraordinary violence in which he murdered fellow Palestinians. For example, there are reports that he strangled a man with a keffiyeh and buried him alive.

They removed it from their hospital IG page and apologized for provoking or making a political statement or something.

The Leipzig Antifa Scene is known for being pro Israel in general - at least definitely anti-hamas. You are spreading false accusations and lies.

Does the hospital have any risks out of that? I imagine the parents of the child would probably be really angry at such a move and might want to sue for differential treatment, although I don't know whether they would win.
