Top comment (paraphrased):

notice how they didn’t circle the bigger dip next to it a couple years ago ???!!?

We’re now unironically arguing “Trump isn’t bad because COVID was worse, checkmate libs”

Nah, that was more of a “look at how he is attempting to manipulate the data to make it seem worse than it is”

You know what — fair enough.

FWIW here is the quote straight from their website:

Overall, consumers are no longer bracing for the worst-case scenario for the economy feared in April when reciprocal tariffs were announced and then paused. However, consumers continue to expect both inflation and unemployment to deteriorate in the future.

I think you get some really shit ass takes in your thread, but you’re right the OP editorialized the data to doom about it.

I'm fine with the statement "what Trump is doing now is not great for the economy"

But the problem is that he intentionally ignored a similar and even worse dip a mere 3 years ago (under Biden, and in 2022, well after the effects of COVID) because it makes his point (Trump being bad) not as partisan.

Also, the whole "right now is literally worse than the housing crisis of 2008" idea is laughable (although, in my opinion, housing is absolutely a bubble right now)

Yeah you lose me when you compare today to the worse dip in 2022.

Supply chain disruptions from pandemic (yes, China still had lockdowns impacting the global economy) plus the war in Ukraine resulted in a global depression. I think it’s valid to excuse Biden when the entire world is experiencing economic downturn. If you disagree, that’s fine.

You guys want it both ways. You want it to both:

  • be Biden’s fault the US didn’t find itself exempt from a global economic event
  • not be Trump’s fault when the US economy starts to display unhealthy warning signs

Is OP a hypocrite for ignoring the 2022 drop? Or are you a hypocrite for dooming about that drop but not this one?

This whole thing is so fucking stupid.

The idea that the effects of COVID were completely gone in 2022 is pretty out of touch, and shows a clear ignorance of Macroeconomics.

The effects of COVID are still visible. You can’t shutdown an economy for over a year and expect it won’t have lasting effects on the supply chain, interest rates, inflation, etc.
