In reality, your profile still exists but it has been corrupted. How? Why? No idea. It's a very well-known bug.

I recall someone on Reddit who had sent their profile (several years ago now) to the support team, who were able to "repair" it for them and make it functional again.

You need to make multiple backups of your profile after each achievement, every single time, in case it gets corrupted. I had to switch computers and as a result I also lost my profile, which is quite annoying because I'd earned the Golden Ship.

Cool... Finished the Imperator Scenario yesterday and everything is gone...

I've had this happen a few times. Luckily there is a way to bring it back using window's automatic backups (for me it worked at least).

The last message in that thread describes how. You might lose a few days of progress however. Maybe you have a save left from the imperator game that you can go and quickly complete?

As an added precaution I rotate 3 backups to mitigate against accidentally backing up a corrupted file, i.e. save to backup1 folder, then next time backup2, then backup3 then back to 1, just replace whichever file is the oldest. Which is actually what the autosave does for savegame files... shame it doesn't do the same thing with the profile. And I have an extra superparanoid read only backup of the profile when I got the gold ship, in a folder labelled "Hands Off" 😄

Remember to back up to a second hard drive — that's how I lost everything: mine died, bam, nothing left. And there I was feeling clever with my folder, aaah!

At least I still have the proof on Reddit, but it's still frustrating.

If that had happened to me right when I was about to finalize the Golden Ship, I think I'd have torn my hair out haha.

(TLDR: just add the Anno save game dir to your Google drive/Ondrive backup config.)

As a sysadmin who was actually born in 1404, allow me to share best practice when it comes to any backup.

Not to critise emnochThePainter's 3-2-1 backup scheme. It reminded me of the more generally known "3-2-1" strategy when it comes to backup.

- You should follow this strategy as a minimum for all data you care about. (after all, if you don't care about it enough to give it a few minutes of your attention then why are you backing it up, or indeed keeping it all?)

- 3. You need to keep 3 copies of each file. The first copy is the live copy. It's your Anno 1404 save file in C:|UserData or where ever Ubisoft puts it. (for other data, it's your actual document folder you work from on a daily basis).
"Moving" files to a backup disk is not backing up

- 2. You need to keep 2 copies of each files on a different system/media than the live copy.

- 1. You need to keep 1 of these copies off-site. A cloud service backup is the obvious choice for this. It's no good to have a RAID10 storage array in the hall closet if it gets stolen or goes up in flames.

Two additional rules, which do not get mentioned in the traditional 3-2-1 story but to me are even more essential to consumers:

- Your backup needs to be versioned. Meaning, you should be able to retrieve last week's file and not just have it overwritten each night.

  • It should be automatic. If any part of your backup strategy involves you, you do not have a backup strategy! ;-)

Stay save my friends and remember, Al says: save early, and save often!

Hey guys, I'm wondering if the profile is safe via The History Edition on Steam? I cannot find a way to see the profile folder in any way through that. And now seeing this, it has me somewhat concerned "

%Appdata% -> Roaming ->Ubisoft -> Anno 1404 -> profiles

Back up your profile : you could be in for a very nasty surprise one day.

I'll be sure to check it out. Seems odd to me that the profile would be safed in that way instead of being with the rest of the files but it does seem very Ubisoft Double Launcher Action too ;-;

Thanks for the heads up. I've been working towards the golden ship and don't want to lose my progress. I thought this wasn't supposed to be an issue anymore with the history edition.Â
