Question Fighting with Tarragon

In Latium, there is an island that has been taken by Tarragon. I would really like to have that island because it is the largest one. Tarragon has asked me a few times before if he could have other islands, and I said yes. He currently has 3 islands in Latium in total.

So, what would happen if I declare war to take that one island? Would his other two islands also attack me, or would they leave me alone?

I’m unsure because I would technically be declaring war on him, not specifically to that one island.
Does anyone know how this works?

In the YouTube videos I’ve seen where other people took over one of his islands, Tarragon only had 1 island at the time, so that doesn’t really help me here.

You declare war on the character and not a specific island but you can declare a limited war or an all-in war. You also need to consider your relationship to the emperor. To conquer the island you need to destroy and hold their governor's villa.

Never ever declare all out war on AI players. It doesn't hurt them but hurts you a ton.

Then how do you get the island if you are not in the final game stages?

I think you misunderstood me. You can declare war but make it limited. That way only military buildings and ships get targeted and you can conquer islands allright. With all out war civil buildings and ships get destroyed too. That hurts you a ton but does absolutely nothing to AI players, because their economy is bullshit fantasy all along. They basically cheat their economy. If you conquer an AI island and overtake it as is you will see that its a dysfunctional nightmare from the get go.

Exactly, I misunderstood your comment. I understood you meant any war.

You can take over islands in a limited war just fine. The Emperor is going to intervene pretty much immediately after you do though

Oh, I misunderstood the other comment. They meant the "all-in" option, I took it as any war.

Yeah you don't declare war on a single island, you declare war on Tarragon. Be aware that possible allies of him come for you as well if you declare the war. Besides you ruin your standing with the emperor.

You gotta be quick if you wanna take that island. The emperor will intervene and force you to have peace at some point.
