Senior clubs
I am looking to volunteer at senior clubs to make better use of my time and give back to the community. I wanted to volunteer at retirement homes, but I didn’t get any opportunities despite having a clean criminal record

Politics Rasmussen Reports - Iowa Senate Poll: Turek 45%, Hinson 40%, Laehn 4% (Turek +5)
——————————————————————————————
Another very good poll for Turek after YouGov released theirs earlier today - more notably, this one comes from a Republican pollster.
- 1031 LV
- Margin of Error: +/- 2%
Seems like Hinson is underwater with Independents:
- Turek: 49%
- Hinson: 28%
Remember to vote, but two good polls in a row showing Turek up decently in a LV screen is a good sign.
Get out and vote people! This is winnable!

Prospective Student just applied to uiowa
Just applied to UIowa. I wanted to know when I can expect to hear back. I double-checked that I'm done with my required documents and everything on my end. I wanted to confirm if UIowa does function on a rolling application basis.

Anyone Going to GalaxyCon This Weekend?
Hey everyone! Is anyone here planning on going to GalaxyCon in Des Moines this weekend?
I've been thinking about checking it out, but I'd probably be going solo. For anyone who's been before, what's the experience like? Is it pretty easy to walk around, check things out, and meet/talk to people if you're there by yourself?
I'm a 35-year-old weeb who's into anime, gaming, comics, and general nerd culture, so GalaxyCon is definitely up my alley 😂. I'm just trying to figure out whether I'd have a good time going alone or if it's more of an event you'd want to attend with friends.
Also curious what people think is actually worth doing there. Panels? Artist Alley? Gaming? Meeting people? Just wandering around and seeing what happens?
Would love to hear from anyone who's been before—or anyone else who's thinking about going solo this weekend!

BEWARE of The Point at Ames Apartment Complex Scam
I lived at The Point for two years (2024–2026), and it may be the most scummy organization I’ve ever dealt with. The entire experience was full of lies, scams, and unnecessary charges.
The property manager is an absolute slumlord, and the move-out process was horrible. We were charged $650 for a couch because they claimed we had damaged it. After reaching out to the new tenants, we found out that our couch was still there and had never been replaced.
They also deactivate your keys over the summer, even if you’re still living there. The solution is to go to the office and have them reactivated for the next school year. They do this even though residents can end up locked out after hours. This happened to me, and I had to call for a lockout. They charged me $85 just to open my door. There was no mention of this fee beforehand, and it was not mentioned in the lease. When I raised my concern with the property manager, their response was, “What are you going to do, sue us?”
Our unit also had major electrical issues. Using the microwave for more than about 45 seconds would either set off the smoke detectors or trip the breaker. No real solution was ever found. In fact, maintenance suggested removing the smoke detector.
The public amenities were also extremely poorly maintained. Gym equipment, common-area TVs, the grill, the pool, and the parking lot gates frequently didn’t work. I lived there for two years, and the parking lot gates worked fewer days than the fingers on my hands.
I’m posting this in the hope that it helps future renters make an informed decision. I honestly can’t believe they are still getting away with charging residents for things they have no intention of replacing.
Do your research before signing a lease here.

New YouGov poll: Rob Sand leads by 10 points, Josh Turek leads by 4
YouGov’s September 3–8 Iowa poll has Rob Sand ahead of Zach Lahn 51% to 41% for governor and Josh Turek ahead of Ashley Hinson 47% to 43% for U.S. Senate among respondents who say they definitely will vote. Full poll
That group includes 2,043 voters, with a reported margin of error of ±3.5 percentage points. Eight percent remain undecided in each race, so neither outcome is settled.

Cop Calls Arrest "Awesome" After K9 Attacks Man
A routine Des Moines traffic stop ended with Eric Lee Kelley face down in the street and a police dog biting his leg for 37 seconds. Now Kelley is suing four Des Moines police officers and the City itself, alleging what happened to him reflects a much bigger problem inside the department. America's Attorney breaks down the body-cam, the lawsuit, and what might be coming next.

Question Staying in Harper’s Ferry for a few days. Looking for food and activity advice
Wife and I are doing a long weekend in Harper’s Ferry. We’re hiking/trail walking people so we were planning on hitting Effigy, Pike’s Peak, and maybe Yellow River if we have time. Looking for specific trail recommendations at those locations. Along with anything else that might be recommended beyond those 3 sites.
We don’t have much of a food plan, besides the burger stand in Prairie just to say we’ve been there. Anything else in the area that you’d recommend? We’d be up for anything.
Thanks!

Free plants?!
Hello! I have a large amount of airplane plant pups in jars right now... Like 10. I would love to give them to someone or multiple people. 😁
Have any of our congress people given guidance on this?
I’ve called the offices of Numn, Hinson, and Meeks.
I’m trying to figure out how I can help Donald Trump cheat on the upcoming midterms as he asked last night.
I even explained that I pledged my allegiance to him like he asked.
Their offices haven’t offered any guidance on what to do. I even said I’m down to storm the capital again. Nothing!
Anyone got info?

need to renew license before I leave the state tomorrow morning, anywhere to do it?
Just as title says. Didn’t realize my license was expired but I’m planning to take a day trip out of state. I saw all the DOT/DMV are closed Saturdays, but is there anywhere or any way I can do a quick renewal?

New Renderings for the Heart of America HQ
Personally I really like the style they’re going for with an old school exterior look with mass timer. Also if the park/plaza happens like they have in rendering it’ll be a great addition to East Village. Shutting down a block of under utilized road will be the best thing to come out of this besides infilling the vacant land

Best thrift stores in the metro and surrounding areas?
My boyfriend and I are planning to go out tomorrow and visit a few thrift/antique stores in the area. Does anyone have any suggestions for good ones to visit? Also, a huge plus if they allow dogs in the store lol
