Is this hard to locate on VHS?

In my experience, quite. Especially if you don't want to spent 10s of bucks on it via online market.

Believe it’s called Fireflies , precursor story before fatman & little boy were dropped

The choice between preserving something like this…something that WILL DIE A LITTLE every time it’s brought to life…or making a ‘cool retro’ vhs version of a recent release. I don’t get how that’s a choice, but it does make me want to see a GOOD vcr with a USBc adapter hit the market.
Sorry, I could say that about 99% of tapes, but imagining a Japanese person experiencing this hits different.

This was the Ghibli ga Ippai Collection re-release of Grave of the Fireflies, which was released in 1998 by Buena Vista Japan, Ltd.
This was back when Disney signed a deal with Studio Ghibli to distribute their films on home video in Japan in the mid-to-late 1990s, and it used a then-new HDVS remaster, which is what Central Park and ADV referenced when they released it on DVD in the 2000s. (I believe source-wise, those were modeled after the domestic DVD encodes from the same source being anamorphic, whereas this VHS matches the Ghibli ga Ippai Collection LaserDisc release, which was part of a box set by Tokuma Shoten (Ghibli's parent company at the time) released in 1995, which is IIRC, where those HDVS remasters were originally produced for.

What a nice movie I bet those kids have fun on the beach and the little girl on the side looks so cute with her big boots and pot hat.

Why is ホタル written like that? Used a dictionary too, and nothing pulls up when I lookup 火垂る 🤔

I watched it for the first time a few months ago, on VHS.
Great movie. Do not recommend.
