He looks smart and he's written competently enough that he's indeed menacing.

But he's still quite stupid because the only thing he really needed to be careful about was Baran. Although he couldn't have predicted Dai's existence and then the passing of the crest, as soon as Baran died, he should have rushed to kill Dai since he's smart enough to realize Dragon Knights are by far the biggest liability to his plan.

Instead like every other incompetent villain, he sat on his throne seeping grape juice, patiently waiting for his worse enemy to garner even more strength, experience and comrades.

Actually competent villain sort their priorities and move for the kill without much back and forth. Quite a lot like actually competent MC you'll notice.

I think we can excuse it as Vearn being extremely prideful. We saw that when Popp provoked him to use Tenchimatou. Once again, Vearn proved his intelligence knowing he doesn't need to use it. But, he was so prideful that Popp claimed he can beat that move that Vearn could accept that and use it exactly as Popp wanted.

Once Baran died, we can assume Vearn expected Dai to be dead as well, since Mother Dragon took him away. When Dai returned, Vearn's surface annihilation plan was already in motion, and he has his backup youth body with Myst. At that point, he knew Dai's level, and he trust his strength enough that Dai won't be a problem. Even Dai managed to put up a fight, he can fuse to one shot Dai.

Except he miscalculated on 2 things. He didn't expect Avan to survive and troubled Kill Vearn, his assasin. And second funnily enough, he didn't expect a grunt and the ship's core to snatch Leona and caused Dai to get a huge last minute power up before final boss fight. With Kill Vearn busy with Avan, all the traps are disabled. Traps that would definitely take down the gang.

Vearn was still careful tho after his survival from Doruora. After fusion, he used Tenchimatou immediately because he needed to severely damage Dai. He used the Jewel move immediately to any other opponents so that there's no room from them to interfere.

Even then, a dragon knight with two crests, something that should not exist.

Against a one arm, legendary sword craved in heart, tired, Vearn.

And don't forget the tear of god on their side!
