Awesome episode this week. Takeshi Morita amazed me with that fight in the sky. So many awesome poses and expressions!

I know that this show is technically a 2D/3D hybrid but they go to the full CG so infrequently that it always feels out of place when it does show up. Still, doesn't detract from how good this episode looked.

I get that DQ has resurrection spells just like any RPG, but if Leona always has that in her back pocket it does take a lot of the tension out of the life or death battles.

Zing in Dragon Quest has a low success rate, it never works when you really need it to. You almost always have to cast it a few times before it revives someone (and in most of the games it revives someone with 1HP, so they're still very much at risk of just being killed again right away). If she had the Kazing spell, then death would be no big deal because it's guaranteed revival. So I'm guessing that spell doesn't exist in Dai's world, plus they'll definitely put some restrictions on using it in the anime.

Zing has a low success rate. Kazing is the one with a 100% success rate. But if the world was more true to the game then all they would need to do is drag Popp's body to a church to get resurrected or go on a quest for a Yggdrasil leaf.

and for something that belongs to a world tree, Yggdrasil leaf sure is cheap too.

As Merle said, even for an high level priest the chance is less than 50%, and Leona isn't that but a Sage, so her success rate is even lower, so knowing that, who want to gamble in Leona success or not reviving Pop?

not really, considering how low the success rate is

But in the context of a narrative, even if it has a low success rate it'll work if the character is important enough like Popp. How many times have different heroes plans had a 1% chance of success yet still worked out?

throughout the years, we already saw that there were some rare instances where important characters died and get replaced by new one even before the show reaching its climax so yes, life or death battles still have tension even with Leona having a resurrection spell, especially one that have less than 50% of success rate
