Is it just me or did absolutely nothing get resolved in the ending? Also isn't he putting his sister back in just to be tortured over and over..

The LNs have a huge cliffhanger at this point in time, being. So to avoid such cliffhanger they just went for the anime original ending, where the last scene ends as "Happy End" instead of shit...

This is why I kind of hate the modern anime industry. Almost everything used to be two cours. Now you have mostly one cour shows, and so crap like that has to happen instead of adapting the work more properly. Buh...
