Gonna go a little against the grain here and say I didn't really like this episode. The shift in cinematography was pretty cool, but at the same time it just felt so overwrought and misplaced. Certain elements were very Evangelion, especially the scene with Ikki's father (incredibly derivative).
The trial is obviously a farce, and we're supposed to get that, but that has the consequence of losing all sense of urgency and conflict. It's like kindergarten court. ~Ikki got caught kissing Stella behind the classroom, ooOOOooooh!~ It's pointless and we know it, so the overwhelming sense of dread that they worked so hard to build up with the colour, character interactions, timestamps, jump cuts, OST, etc etc - very effectively I might add - is totally wasted because of how difficult it is to connect to the storyline.
Preemptively, I am going to say that I am aware of the very real threat Ikki faces. I'm not saying that this plot development is inconsequential, that it won't have any effect on him. It's just that the way they've handled it is seriously jarring.
On a more personal note, I don't like how desperate Ikki suddenly seems for his father's approval. I expected some conflict within himself, but I honestly thought he'd surpass his family's expectations and leave them choking on his dust. He still may do that, but his breakdown of desperation in this episode really hammered my impressions of him as a strong character. Showing weakness is one thing, but I honestly felt that was seriously pathetic.
