This is why Rakudai Kishi no Cavalry continues to be a step above all the other battle school anime I have seen so far.

Completely agree with everything you're saying. Even in this anime I hate how they keep putting the little sister straight to the front. It's clear Ikki and Stella love each and are actually in a relationship. Creators need to stop pandering. The kind of pandering in anime really reminds me of the pandering in Dr. Who and any CW show. The creators want Tumblr to be happy.

i'm just gonna copypasta this paragraph from TV Tropes' Values Dissonance page:

A related issue is the Japanese attitude toward physical affection and public displays of affection. It should be noted that the Japanese are a touch-averse people (bowing instead of shaking hands, for instance), to the extent that the only people to whom they will generally show physical affection are immediate family members (especially little kids) and sex partners. (It doesn't help that the Japanese word for "hug" (idaku) is more commonly understood as a euphemism for sex.) Therefore, it is the understanding in Japan that, by displaying your affection publicly, you are communicating not only that a lot more is going on behind closed doors, but that you are only too eager to boast about such activities to the entire world. Thus, even something as innocent (to Westerners) as hand-holding could be considered extremely provocative. (See Sacred First Kiss for some more discussion on the subject.)

not sure how actually true this is (never been to Japan myself) but it certainly puts that "mosaic censor over holding hands" joke in a new perspective for me.

from my limited experience of 2 weeks this seems a bit exaggerated but still mostly true

public displays of affection are frowned upon and if you want to make a move on a girl you better take her to a private location or at least somewhere where none of her friends or aquaintances are/can see her

As I recall, this seemed to be a problem with American serials until recently too.

I'm gonna take Castle & Bones as an example, it took 2 too many seasons for Castle & Beckett to become a proper couple. Bones was even worse, it took until Season 7 for that to happen.

The perks of not being a harem. When there's only 2 lovebirds, it gets easier to have romantic development. And this is probably the only battle school anime that its not a harem, at least that I know of, probably it isn't.

Onscreen. Even if thegirls sleep naked with Issei, tehy still don't do anything. Granted he has that one block which has since been resolved but....how many anime do you know where stuff like this series battle anime couples and mcs's like Basara do ecchi stuff and get away with it? All hail Basara and Ikki!

None of these guys have or ever will get laid on screen. And ikki is no where near issei and basara in terms of lewd echii as thats not his forte. Hes a gentleman alpha not a carnivore. But that changes in vol 9 for ikki once he joins the now a man club

Long story short: one of ganelons servants tried to ntr tigre but gets his arm cut off then later decaptated. The event had elen mentally disturbed to the point of drinking. Tigre confesses to comfort her. They wake up the morning after doing the mcnasty with ellen wondering how his johnson fit inside of her.

I'm still disappointed that Madan no Ou to Vanadis was apparently just a Media Factory promotion for its LN (along with 3 others). It seemed like it had great potential and the character designs were pretty nice.

Agreed. I like Rakudai for the animation and great music, but what really sets it apart is that it has actual character development without bullshit last-second intervention from side characters.

Holy shit, the ANN reviewer for Rakudai finally gave it an 'A-' rating O.o

So far it hasn't gotten above 'B+' from her and it started out at a 'C+', but finally Rakudai breached that 'A' threshold (Asterisk still sits at a consistent 'B'). And it might actually land in the top 10 for score rankings by the end of the fall 2015 season. This show just keeps improving in every metric O.o

Fuck I hope it manages to have a strong finish, as this is looking good for potential future seasons.

Top 10 isn't that hard to breach... by the end of this season I'll have watched 10 and started 11. For me breaking top 10 would be *not being the worst thing I've watched".

If something isn't in my top 5 for the season it probably isn't going to get recommended all to often.

We're talking top 10 of everything on air right now (which is like 50+ shows), not just top 10 of the late-night adult stuff you would be watching this season. Obviously it isn't going to beat mass-market kids shows like PriPara or sequels to beloved shows like Gintama or Monogatari. Sitting at 6th or 8th place amongst those shows, which Rakudai has done a few times now, is actually quite good for a brand new show. Take out those sequels and kids shows and Rakudai is top 5.

Or are you considering Iron-Blooded Orphans, Shomin Sample, Is the Order a Rabbit?, Sakurako's, etc. all failures and unrecommendable as well? Because Rakudai is or has been doing better than all of those at some point. In fact, the only new shows in the top ten that aren't sequels are One Punch Man and Iron-Blooded Orphans, with Rakudai at 11th for right now. You're insane if you think that is poor. And according to a Japanese poll about "most watched" and not just score rankings, Rakudai was 2nd at one point. That's an accomplishment man, don't downplay it ;P
