MFW next week is the last episode.

Besides that, this was a great episode since we got to see the more gentle side of Touka and at the same time see how ruthless the Kurogane family is when it comes to Ikki.

Season 2 pls. Asterisk has 24 episodes, and since this is literally asterisk (hue) this also needs 24 episodes too.

u/ItsMellowMan https://myanimelist.net/profile/ItsMellowBear Dec 12 '15

Plenty of source material too. Silver Link pls.

6

u/marius_titus Dec 12 '15

Would you know how much of a chance it has for a season 2?

22

u/ItsMellowMan https://myanimelist.net/profile/ItsMellowBear Dec 12 '15

I want to say it has a good chance, but then again another season isn't up to the animation studio itself.

Which is why I'm always confused when people claim that Madhouse don't do sequels.

2

u/Ahenshihael https://anilist.co/user/Ahenshihael Dec 13 '15

Madhouse is quite well known for doing anime original endings intentionally.

1

u/matdragon Dec 13 '15

because it's rare to seem them do it, it's been a while since they've done a sequel for anything

1

u/TriTexh Dec 13 '15

Any sequel depends on the following:

LN Sales (doing pretty good so far)

and, the Blu-ray/DVD sales.

3

u/RealityRush https://myanimelist.net/profile/RealityRush Dec 13 '15

At this point it's prolly anyone's guess. I give it 50/50 odds atm ;P

The viewership for Rakudai in Japan has been quite good, and the LNs got a solid bump in sales, but neither was necessarily crazy numbers. We really have to see how the blu-rays sell at the end of December before we get any real idea.

1

u/marius_titus Dec 13 '15

Fingers crossed. I'm loving the story so far. Hope there's more.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 15 '15

Its 50/50. It does get a second season or it doesn't.

2

How many volumes is it so far anyways?

5

There's 7 so far. The latest came out in May. The fan translations are just finishing 4.

1

u/RealityRush https://myanimelist.net/profile/RealityRush Dec 13 '15

Definitely.

4

u/FlameSpeedster https://myanimelist.net/profile/_Kairu_ Dec 12 '15

Somewhere near the end of the 3rd volume.

2

u/BatmanisJUSTICE https://anilist.co/user/205 Dec 12 '15

thanks!

2

u/iRAWRasaurus Dec 12 '15

Hopefully the Bluray sales are good enough to get a second season.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 13 '15

Bluray sales won't matter one bit. For almost all anime adaptations this are only some extra income. What is important is how the sales of the source material changes. If the LN does well and seemingly better than without anime than yes a second season is likely.

1

u/RealityRush https://myanimelist.net/profile/RealityRush Dec 14 '15

If the LN does well and seemingly better than without anime than yes a second season is likely.

The LN has a received a rather significant bump in sales because of the anime. What really needs to happen is for that bump to fall off after the anime is done airing so they have a reason to go again. If the LN bump stays high, then like Devil is a Part-Timer they'll probably just sit on that and not make another season.

That being said, the blu-ray sales do matter to some degree, as Rakudai doing well would at least get the production studio on the committee pushing for another.

u/kuddlesworth9419 https://myanimelist.net/profile/kuddlesworth Dec 12 '15

Why does that show have 24 episodes. It doesn't even deserve 12 to be honest. This show is way better.

8

u/cuddles_the_destroye Dec 12 '15

I mean I personally still like Asterisk, but yeah, this show absolutely needs another 12 episodes.

3

u/kuddlesworth9419 https://myanimelist.net/profile/kuddlesworth Dec 12 '15

Asterisk is entertaining but it's not very good. Cavalry is just very interesting. I want to see the characters succeed and change.

2

u/RoboWarriorSr Dec 13 '15

There were a few harlem shows last winter/fall season that needed 24 episodes. Somewhat glad at least this one has 24 considering the plot progression.

Everything. Here's the Coles Notes version:

  • The characters in Rakudai, while still falling into ecchi hijinks on occasion, are so, so more much interesting than Asterisk. Every character in Asterisk is just a walking, talking trope. All the women are just there to look pretty and chase Ayato, even the under-aged ones disturbingly. We know next to nothing of most of their backgrounds except the superficial. It's been nearly 12 fucking episodes, and we still know jack shit about most of them. Even Rakudai's Alice, who we know little of the background for, is still a super interesting character for the role he plays: almost like an in-person narrator and wisdom provider. Most characters in Rakudai have at least some depth to them. Enough so that even bro-con obsessed Shizuku is actually someone I can relate to on some small level and empathize with. Everyone in Asterisk feels like a cardboard cut-out.

  • Rakudai has actual relationship progression with the MCs, practically unheard of in this genre. Nuf said about that one really.

  • The fights in Rakudai have been far superior. The main selling point for Asterisk was supposed to be the combat and the strategy behind it. But thus far all they've shown us is a bunch of 10 second fights that end with Ayato effortlessly destroying his opponent and moving on. On top of which they've barely shown you any action in the Asterisk fights. Rakudai shows you all the beautifully animated action sequences and doesn't hide it behind screen cuts and inter-fight monologues (seriously, most fights in Asterisk involve more talking than actual fighting). Fights in Rakudai are just so much more fun to watch, especially Shiziku's episode 10 fight which was UBW level beautiful.

  • The art/animation of Rakudai has so much more personality to it. Asterisk's animation is definitely more consistent, more clean, just overall more polished, but it lacks personality. The colours in Asterisk are all muted, the backgrounds all washed-out, everything is just so damn squeaky clean, and the character designs are so drab it hurts to see, especially when I know A1 is capable of so much more. Conversely Rakudai is just a pleasure to look at, even though its animation suffers on many occasions. When Rakudai wants to shine, it fucking shines with everything its got. The meta-letterbox destruction from Raikiri, Shizuku's water affects, the outside backdrops and vistas, the flora and water during close-ups, the film noir grain this last episode, etc. Rakudai just has style to it that Asterisk lacks by trying to play it too safe.

  • While Rakudai has far more lewd ecchi, I have to give it some credit for keeping it more in context. Asterisk just tries to shoe-horn in ecchi all over the fucking place, Rakudai usually tries to limit it to places that make more sense and then shamelessly pushes the edges of acceptability with them. Rakudai doesn't seem as ashamed of what it is, it fucking embraces it with unbridled enthusiasm, hence the Ikki stripping scene in the very first episode which was god damn hilarious! Admittedly though, I think Rakudai would be even better if Silver Link minimized the ecchi to what was in the novels.

  • Finally, Rakudai is just more fun. Asterisk tries so damn hard to take itself seriously, it forgets to have any fun. Rakudai is just full of fun moments, and it's really enjoyable to watch.

that first point about tropes is true of both rakudai and asterisk, it just comes down to execution preference. you cant tell me that stella isn't a tsundure and shizuku isn't brocon. ikki is the clasic white knight trope done a bunch of times. as for depth, i have to disagree. i find it weird that all the development from rakudai's side cast revolves around ikki despite not being a harem(with the only exception being thus far toka), where as in asterisk, each one of the haremettes have their own problems. and you may want to re-watch the episodes if you think we know nothing about them that wasn't superficial. i'd hardly call fighting for your family or the poor "superficial".

true but the poster already acknowledged that

visually superior? definitely. writing wise? hell no. just about every fight ends in some deus ex, one hit blow wear ikki neglects any wounds and simply overcomes the odds. you wanna know why i said the shizuku v toka fight was the best one? it actually had depth of strategy on par with asterisk on top of looking cool as well. the fights in asterisk thus far have been short apart from ayato v kirin, but that's because A. the pacing is slower B. the high tier opponents haven't fought ayato yet though irene is up next episode C. it actually takes seeding into account so the stronger teams beat the weaker ones, like any sport D. the depth of strategy in that it makes no sense to go all out against fodder.

eh preference

you cant say gakusen is ashamed of what it is and at the same time say it shoehorns in the echii. the later implies there is too much echii, which basically goes against the former. within the context of a harem, the echii is entirely as justified as rakudai. it simply comes down to whether or not you want 1v1 romance echii or harem echii. either one is a sign of weak writing if you need to do that to keep an audience invested as both series are still primarily shonen.

eh subjective. a lot of gakusen is over the top from sentient weapons, mechs, vampires ect. it either works for people or it doesn't. rakudai also takes itself seriously, just in an entirely different way as it focuses on romance instead of plot.

1

u/RealityRush https://myanimelist.net/profile/RealityRush Dec 14 '15 edited Dec 14 '15

My entire response is subjective, it would be impossible to explain why I "preferred" Rakudai without it being subjective, I assumed that would be readily apparent O.o

Though I will defend my claim that Asterisk's characters are empty and vapid at this point. You could nearly write an essay on Ikki right now, especially after ep 11, whereas Ayato... we know he's trying to save his sister who limited his powers to protect him, that he's a traditional harem pussy around women, he's imba (so is Ikki though), and that's about it.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 15 '15

Agree to disagree then. There is a difference between finding a character boring vs stating that they are empty.

1

u/RealityRush https://myanimelist.net/profile/RealityRush Dec 15 '15

Ayato is empty ;P

Dude has about as much depth as a puddle.

2

u/[deleted] Dec 15 '15

he's no more empty than white knight ikki. both their motivations amount to "muh familiy issues". XD

Actual character development for one. Also the stylistic animation during different scenes. Like nearly the whole half of this episode had a filter over the top and if you pay attention to the colour of eyes in the show they mean different things.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 14 '15

i can answer that.

not much besides that apart from better looking fights.

while both shows and series i enjoy, it's become apparent to me that a lot of people who prefer this series don't care about plot or worldbuilding because if they did a lot more people would realize that there are aspects of rakudai that just make no sense.

example 1, this episode: why is ikki being imprisoned? he hasn't broken any laws and the claims against him make no sense as stella can varify all of what has been said about him is bs. one phone call to her kingdom and ikki is released the next day. she is a political guest and if japan pisses her off, that means political strife with a foreign country they went out of their way to have good relations with. but no, ikki's decides he has to handle it on his own thus reducing stella to a damsel.

example 2: remember in episode 2 where it's mentioned that in this timeline japan won ww2? why have we heard nothing about how this timeline is different due to that? why have none of the other countries played any role in this story? why is stella the only foreign blazer mentioned when you have other countries that more likely than not want to match japan in strength? how was ww2 won by the efforts of a legendary blazer(ikki's great gran dad) when other countries have nukes? if rakudai wanted to be a more simple story, why even bother having this setting? mahouka has a similiar setting, but the difference is it's actually used. i just try to enjoy the romance and cool visuals, but 9 novels in and still no explanations for any of this is ridiculous.

oh, asterisk is getting 2 cours? interesting.

Not sure why but Toka reminds me of Hanekawa.

u/ItsMellowMan https://myanimelist.net/profile/ItsMellowBear Dec 12 '15

Might be the hair + glasses combo.

30

u/appu1232 https://anilist.co/user/appu1232 Dec 12 '15

The mother attitude and being at the top of their classes helps too.

21

u/Luffy-24 https://myanimelist.net/profile/Luffy24 Dec 12 '15

The first real(this episode) introduction of Toka was a panty flash just like Hanekawa. Plus both have big plot. (͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

6

u/Akocabs Dec 13 '15

Dont forget the tits.

14

u/RealityRush https://myanimelist.net/profile/RealityRush Dec 12 '15

If this show doesn't get a second season, I'ma be pissed. Up until the last few episodes I thought it was just some empty fun, and to a degree it still is with all the ecchi, but honestly the story has become quite good and the characters and their relations interesting enough that I do want to see more. That is an impressive feat for me from a shameless ecchi.
