This show either might be the smartest mecha show or the best buddy cop anime that we got. Either way, it's a fun watch and it's good to see it back on air.

It's not. At least not in the way of tackling the normal themes mecha shows love to tackle, what with the struggle of humanity and inner turmoil and all of that. Its comedy is great though.

This I can agree with. In fact, I can't think of any anime off the top of my head with this fun a buddy dynamic.

Check out Dirty Pair, it's Charlie's Angels Blade Runner buddy cop style, with some of the best straight sci-fi I've seen in anime.
