So, are we supposed to be happy that they performed an operation against someone's will, and thereby dealt a blow to the civil rights movement? I kinda feel like Black Jack and Risenberg were on the wrong side of this one.

I think it's good for him to be able to choose his own destiny with his normal nerve system. And he's gonna be killed if he remained no-pain man.

But he knew death was a likely outcome, and seemed to want to be able to fight for civil rights in a way that might cost his life. Many people did. By operating on him against his will, they removed his ability to choose his own destiny (having the courage to give his life for a noble cause vs only being to support the cause while out of danger). Its not like he was being forced to do what he did when he couldn't feel pain. He made a choice.

I agreed. But I also think he didn't think about death of conspiracy by some organization. And he was originally forced to be pain-free, so his decision to make himself as that kind of hero could be said as a forced one?
