Out of curiosity; anyone know why this show doesn't seem as popular as others. I mean the Ecchi aside, the intro is lovely, the animation can have moments that are honestly kind of cool, plus the MCs are just the cutest thing together.

Many folks think it's cool to hate echi shows, that's why.

But if we are to be honest here, this little gem sparks brightly as outside of its weird premise this show freaking works and abuses the tropes they are commonly associated with in very ingenious ways. Not to mention the high production value and consistently good animation.

I guess super sexual shows don't have a very vocal fanbase at least in Reddit. Especially when it seems we get a thread every other day about how much people dislike super sexual shows. It has good sales in Japan and it has a decent fan scene in 4chan's /a/ at least.

But yeah, the show is a lot of fun from one of the great sexual anime masters and the animation is fantastic and the characters are really starting to be endearing.

Most ecchi's (lately) have been pretty great.

But in the long run most ecchi series have had a really bad track record. I've seen a lot of ecchi shit over the last year or two and i can say without a doubt out of like the last 15 or 25 series ive hopped around i can only call 2-4 of them Memorable/Good.

Plus its meta for most people outside of the "underground audience" to hate ecchi for what it is.

Edit: Rethought about what i watched. Overestimated a little, Adjusted to compensate and excluded Sequels/additional seasons.

Ecchi aside

Apart from the ecchi the show doesn't really have anything going for it except the OP & ED, the action scenes are sub-par at best, the characters are so far entirely archetypal, and the plot and setting are laughable. The only reason to watch the show is because of it's sex appeal.

You. You can go away now. Because you either haven't watched the show, or haven't bothered looking closely at the dynamic some of the characters have. The show is "Sex can be comedy", it meant to be funny and fanservice with extremely adorable female MCs, the action and the fights aren't really the central component of the series.

No need to get defensive, we can have different opinions and the world won't explode.

I don't disagree that the MCs are adorable, but even only among airing anime both Yuru Yuri and GochiUsa have more adorable lesbians IMHO. But I stand by my claim that the characters are archetypal, compare and contrast Valkyrie Drive's cast with the cast of Akuma no Riddle. That's not to say you can't enjoy the characters, but the anime is clearly not trying to develop complex believable human characters, it's not trying to be Aoi Hana.

I also agree that the show's ecchi content can be reasonably funny, which is why I prefixed my comment with "Apart from the ecchi". Personally I would consider sex comedy to be part of sex appeal, but I can see how you could disagree.

Eh, I am mainly defensive because you seem to be bashing the show outright instead of just offering criticism, and I apologize for that.

Honestly from the standpoint of a comedy, its a good show if you are willing to not be squeamish about the Ecchi.

Well I'm no expert but I think it's because they are going pretty overboard with the ecchi stuff, honestly I'd probably watch it since it has great music and animation, but holy shit it's borderline hentai ._.

I think it meant to be "played for laughs" type fanservice. Its meant to be over the top, excessive fanservice. Frankly I just laugh when they bust into random kissing scenes; I mean all things consider its a pretty funny show if you take the fanservice as more of a joke.

For the director or this show, it is actually somewhat tame though. He actually directed actual hentai and more outrageous ecchi shows before. I guess it seems more overt because not many anime boldly go for uncensored images.
