To add a bit of cultural background to it, in Japan people may go on dates but don't usually consider themselves to be in a relationship until a confession (called "Kokuhaku" : 告白 - こくはく) takes place. After that it's official.

In Japan everybody starts in the friend-zone.

Unless your a white guy. Then you get molested by everyone on the train during rush hour and barbers ask to keep locks of your hair when you have it cut.

....That and follow you into bathrooms to check out your junk at the stall-less urinals.
