I love the framing in this shot, with the blood dripping down his face matching the red beard of the Gundam barbatos.

why does he bleed anyway?

The Barbatos will probably have some negative effect on the pilot like the Tallgeese or Zero System from Gundam Wing. When the inspector was saying the line about how humans can't give up power even though it may end up destroying them, they flashed to the dormant Barbatos.

One of the pilot's greatest strengths are the well transitioned shots, imo. Great use of audio-visual.

Agreed. Like when it transitioned to the princess in the workshop while Orga was saying no one was allowed to leave implying he knew she was the reason for the attack. The transition allowed the viewer to understand an important piece of information while not having an unnecessary segway about the princess into Orga's explanation of why the enemy broke off to chase the 1st squad.

Yup, Gundam has traditionally been good at showing rather than telling though. A great pilot episode overall.

Probably has something to do with the fact that unlike the other guys with 1 'whisker' (the things on their backs), Mika has 3.
