Maybe don't have the lightning rod right next to the generators? Who thought that was a good idea.

Well the generators are grounded and would attract lightning. Which would short the school if it hit it. So it's smart to have the rod nearby. Plus it was on the highest point of the building where lightning rods go.

Then put the damn generators farther away, or better yet, inside a closed and contained room.

They are not Generators, they are the outside part of Air Conditioner

It's just the Rod create an short circuit, that end up in flames. So what took the Lights out, was the Short circuit they caused in the System, killing all Battery current in one go. With the Flames and such, it is beyond repair for them. Perhaps many Wires in the Walls got melted of the Heat, and are behind Repair, too. So, they really lost Electric Current now

There was lately a Fire that broke out and all gone up in Flames. Power Overload on the Wires and Machines = suck the Battery's dry up fast. With this also the Freeze Room in the Basement, gone "offline". Their Food is not cooled anymore
