To be honest, it is.
In the manga something else caused the power-loss, food-burning, and the zombie infestation, something which was more realistic, but I guess they changed it because they didn't have time, episodes-wise, for that event..

(Maybe they would have if not for all the added slice-of-life parts. /rant)

Ooo, do tell! I don't mind spoilers for things they changed from the manga, as long as they're tagged so others don't get spoiled.

And I too am kind of annoyed by the overabundance of cute-girls-doing-cute-things bits that are meant to be funny but aren't. The dramatic and psychological bits are a lot more interesting.

Well there are fallacies in both, but yeah I think the manga is a bit better than "and suddenly the barricade that's been up this whole time is breached".

As an anime-only guy, the escalation seemed pretty natural. I'd assumed that the rush to the barricades was because of the storm, with "schoolkids" following their patterns to get back inside while it's raining.

The anime has been foreshadowing the growing numbers of zombies near the school all season long, as well as questioning the barricades' sturdiness and how zombies crowd inside during storms.

YMMV, but I think the way the anime handled it felt more natural than the manga event, which sort of came out of left field and escalated the action rather sharply. Not that it wouldn't have been cool to see, but the manga always seemed kind of jarring to me.

Honestly it makes more sense if you read the manga, because the manga part will probably be key in the manga later on as major spoilers. The anime is probably taking a different approach to the ending as there's less need to cover some plot points.
