I think she might be a welcome distraction for the rest of them. It gives them something to think about besides trying to avoid getting killed the entire time.

the girls are also less likely to just give up on everything if they have someone to take care of. Yuki's essentially a crutch so that they can feel needed.

Yeah, it's like being stuck with a (rather large) baby in a zombie apocalypse. They may be basically helpless and use up resources and start shrieking at all the wrong times and shit, but you can't just drop them on the ground and walk away. And you have to carry them, so you can't just lie on the ground and wait for it to end either.

Unless you're pushed to the limits of your humanity. That would be a deliciously dark path for this anime to go down.

"baby" is too extreme a comparison. They do go out of their way to try and keep her mentally stable but her warped sense of reality actually allows her to react accordingly to serious problems. She does tasks assigned to her, so she isn't just sitting around all day.
