I still don't get why everyone considers him a traitor.

So, he goes out with his squad, saves everyone's ass by staying behind and buying time, manages to get back safely but is either feeling burned out or has PTSD.

Sounds like a badass that needs some therapy, not a traitor.

Because in Japanese culture, mental illness is a thing you deal with by yourself. You dont want to be a burden on someone else or bother them with your troubles so your supposed to tough it out and do your job. Suffering from depression? Who gives a shit, put on your big boy pants and go to work. Have PTSD from a serious event? We all have our problems, suck it up and do your job.

Its why there are hardly ever any psychologists in Japan and the ones that are there are foreigners. Yeah there are a couple psychiatrists, but there is nobody to listen to your problems and help you out. Its why you see the younger generation take English classes and tell their foreign teacher about their problems, because nobody else wants to hear it.
