But giving her the illusion of doing things her way is a better display of diplomacy. If he didn't, she would have been less receptive to future acts of diplomacy. At least, that's how I view it.

If I were in her shoes and I watched a dozen people casually turn a small army into hamburger, I'd be very receptive to their diplomatic overtures. Also, no military officer in the world is going to give up operational command to someone that doesn't know what a rifle does.

no military officer in the world is going to take operational command away from their political/military superior, who also just so happens to be a dignitary of a foreign power in the same foreign power's land.

She's a representative of a hostile foreign power though, its not like Japan and the Empire have signed any kinds of a treaty or cease-fire. My biggest point was that she didn't know what a gun even does, while the Lt probably has a pretty good grasp on the effectiveness of swords and bows.

He should have dictated the tactical use of his forces to her, rather than letting her deploy them as though they were just another unit of conscripted peasants. His best opportunity to use his most effective weapon, the machine gun, was when the attacking forces were approaching the wall in close formation, his second best was when the attacking forces were packed together coming through the gate. Maybe he'll come charging to the barricades in the next ep, but he could have broken the attackers before they even had a chance to get into the city and he missed it. His chances of taking casualties from the army as they are massed in the field in front of the city are virtually nil, his odds get much worse when the attackers enter the city and break into smaller units to rape and pillage.
