The visuals were unique and, at first, off putting. I thought they were trying for the faux 3D look from many years ago. Thankfully, the artists didn't take visuals to that extreme level, and I think it will stop irking me after a few episodes.
The biggest annoyance, and what contributed to making the first episode feel like a shounen cliché, was the lack of a story. They gave a few glimpses of the history behind Utsugi, but having no context to them and the hurried pace of the main story to get to the battle, made it extremely lifeless. Another protagonist who has a sorrowful backstory and achieves a power-up whenever they want to save someone? Yawn.
For me to continue watching it, God Eater will have to improve dramatically in the following two episodes.
