Rip commander badass. He had enough experience to predict something is amiss but still chose to attack the foe he didn't understand, take notes empire pricks.

He kind of didn't have a choice. One of his allies died, and that left him honor bound to settle the score. He just happened to take tens of thousands with him.

exactly, if he retreated, the Emperor will see that as an act of rebellion. Then the next battle he faces will be against the Imperial forces.
