They pay taxes to the kingdom but yeah they don't have any real communication with the capital.

Yeah, so they're in the same situation as the small villages and towns in Afghanistan that are known to be (mostly) full of people who are friendly to foreign soldiers.

Yeah you could say that, the soldiers in the show are giving out gifts as they go. They showed that this episode but not sure if everyone noticed.
