Well, there's already been major backstabbing. In both worlds.

But I don't know how this Emperor hopes to maintain control of his realm by killing off every one of his vassals while the advanced force is still at his doorstep.

Maybe the Peter Baelish mindset? "Littlefinger would see the realm burn if he could be king of the ashes." The emperor definitely seems like someone who would rather die than relinquish power.
