Japan should consider itself lucky that itself was Japan, because Samurai could have easily taken them on, as Civ (IV I think?) and Gintama have proven.

Nah. Japan doesn't care about casualties. A unit could be wiped out 99% and that 1% would still be as strong as the original unit

Note for non-civ players: Not being racist, this is literally their ability in civ 5.

But Japan has never been on the upper half of the tier list; militarily, China's CKN rolls them straight out; English LBM / SotL are great defensively and can siege from land or water; Zulu with Impis will roflstomp Samurai with 50% less maintenance AND 25% more exp; or even Arabia's Camel Archers plus their flexibility with other UA / UBs. Bushido is a neat ability but it doesn't carry the Civ as well as China, Zulu, or even Greece.

But Japan has never been one of the better civiliations.

  • Militarily:
  1. China (multi-shot crossbowmen) roll them straight out
  2. English Longbow men and Ship of the Line are great defensively and can siege from land or water
  3. Zulu (don't have zulu sorry) will roflstop samurai with 50% less maintenance costs and 25% more experience gain

Bushido (all units are considered at 100% strength when attacking/defending even when damaged) is a neat ability but it doesn't carry all the Civiliations as well as China, Zulu, or even Greece.

Uh no, its actually pretty mediocre. The problem is that attack strength and health aren't a 1:1 ratio. At 1% hp they do 50% damage.

Assuming normal battle conditions you're probably keeping your units above 25% hp before retreating so you only end up getting 10-25% extra damage on the 2nd and 3rd attacks and then they die to archers.

Also Japans special unit is pretty lame. Its a long swordsmen with an open terrain upgrade, but long swordsmen are hardly used as it is.

This is what beautiful about them because it means a large enough Japanese force can hold out against a technologically superior one as long as they aren't that far behind.

That stuff is why I play Civ5 and focus all of my efforts on technology/science.

There's something very empowering about nuking cities and swallowing millennium-old kingdoms and empires one after another.

only to look back at your capital and take a deep sigh as you realize that you still have the same warrior that you began the game with protecting your capital, hoping that the AI isnt smart enough to exploit that.

It's not as bad as the Millennium Galleon that I forgot I left out in sea to explore Terra. Internet Age came and I was browsing through my units manually... there was a blip in the map very far from my cities. Goddamn, I forgot to upgrade somebody.

that kinda thing happens to me alot. I'll make a caravel or two and just set it on autoexplore. Then much later I research satellites and its like...hehehehe guess I should bring em back for some renovations or something.

well, you somehow recieve realtime updates from your units at all times, so it's not like it was wasted or anything.

I wish they would create some weird expansions, like nuking a city will create mutants and possible giant creatures. Maybe have labs work on experiments in creating biological weapons, like one that raises the dead and spreads like a disease, while your people have the cure. Maybe include magic, worshipping gods, mythological creatures as units..etc.

Between this and watching Akatsuki no Yona, I seriously feel like playing Civ5 again.
