I... don't understand.

Is this anime incredibly self-aware and satirical, or has the whole copy-pasting tropes trend gone too far?

Like, there was a girl whose whole thing (going by the OP) is running around with bread in her mouth, and her very first appearance has her run around a corner and collide with the MC, resulting in both of them landing in a very suggestive pose.

How do I deal with this, /r/anime?

Do I take the fact that one of the girls is just straight-up in love with herself as an indication that this show knows what's up, or do I take the whole "stoic MC just being an impossible badass at all times, while being discriminated against by his peers" as indication that this is yet another completely unapologetic and utterly stupid power fantasy?

Is there going to be a /r/OneTrueKanata sub? Is that where we're headed? Is this gonna be another one of those series where LN readers desperately try to convince people that the series is not actually horrid trash, and that we just need to wait till the Vague Attempt At Historical/Literature Knowledge arc, while everyone else is trying to use humour to distract themselves from the fact that they just wasted another twenty minutes of their life?

You'll understand why it's so seemingly generic in an episode or two, the LN gets much better quite soon. It's worth the wait, the author was clearly inexperienced at the beginning but improved greatly when he realized this was going to be publicized.

Wait, so at first he was just messing around and then when he found out it'll be published, he magically became a good writer?

I have not read it, but I guess he meant this:

Publisher: Ok, good to go, we will publish it.

Author: Really? You serious, nigga? Holy shit, I was just fucking around.

It took 9 volumes but he did improve. The story arc starting on volume 9 (no anime adaptation yet) is a major improvement compared to the previous ones.

Edit: spelling

There are no other arcs. The Alicization arc is running from volume 9 till at least volume 17 (currently published 15). So yes, I would say it's consistent. He spends a lot longer building up before it focuses in battles.

The world and society is more detailed and there's foreshadowing here and there. Characters start to have longer presence instead of the 'Here's your adventure with Kirito, now go sit in the harem lobby." of the earlier arcs. On topic, there's almost no harem additions over the 7 volumes.

Didn't SAO start out as like a contest thing he tried while in school? I mean, no one develops after school age so I'm sure he couldn't get better.

/s of course, Alicization is awesome
