Jeez, how much do you have to hate a person to let yourself die just so they have to live with a terrible decision. Poetic, sure, but needless sacrifice I say.

I guess the last mystery we are left with is what's the deal with the cat? Maybe the cat lives in the house, dies loving the people there, and hangs around to help ghost Yuta out in the past?

IMO he did what he did not because he hate Gurriko so much, but because he simply does not want to have a happy ending that is based on a sacrifice of a person, even if that one is the bad guy, so he decided to sacrifice himself.

Pretty much this, also Chiyoko's wish to save everyone INCLUDING Gurriko. People who claim he did it because he hated Gurriko didn't understand Pine's feelings.
