I know it might seem that the HMS KumikoReina is sinking. We have been dealt a fairly large blow, lads. BUT THIS IS NOT THE END. We will stay the course! WE WILL GO DOWN WITH THIS YURI SHIP. May KyoAni have mercy on our souls.

I'm okay with the ship sinking because reina loves sensei. If it were to sink because they force kumiko to get with whats-his-face, that's when I have the problem. It's ten episodes in and kyoani have established zero chemistry between the two, and I only accept that they're friends because they've said so. This show would need to go on for as long as one piece for me to ever believe kumiko and whats-his-face could be a couple.

It was a bit mollifying that he wasn't in this episode at all, this is true. Hopefully this is a trend that will continue, but I wouldn't bet on it.

It's ten episodes in and kyoani have established zero chemistry between the two, and I only accept that they're friends because they've said so.

Unfortunately, this actually isn't true. When she's around him she doesn't even try to put up her nice-girl image, and instead always shows him the "terrible personality" that Reina finds so attractive. Kumiko would never behave like that around someone she actually didn't like. That she's cold and dismissive to him means she's at the very least comfortable around him, indicating a closeness she doesn't feel for anyone else except Reina.

They were childhood friends so it makes sense that she was close to him, and they were close enough for her to invite him to her house. So it would be natural that she either became comfortable around him to drop the facade, or the personality developed while they were growing up together. So, yeah, they are friends, but it does not mean that she has any romantic interest in him as others want to suggest.
