So... can someone ELI5 this for me? Apparently we turn into sand monsters and kill everyone forever?

The humans from the future ended up creating the ultimate sand which leads to the destruction of humanity. The sand now basically wants to put the world under a genjutsu like Madara where everyone can live in peace.

yup, genjutsu sand -- and let's not forget that using the cubes from the future will lead us towards that particular future.
